A lot of fun...did the clubs clinic and then shot the match. I'd only shot the M1 a few times..got a 215/300. Could be better, could be worse. There was only 5 shooters and none of us had shot a match before, so overall, I came in a close second.

Was a lot of fun..gotta work on the offhand stuff some.

Nothing like shooting in Michigan in February..this time it was 30s and tons of rain. We had to shoot prone from on top of the benches since the concrete was covered in a 1/2" of rain and ice.

My friend that was going to lend me a shooting mat didn't show yesterday, so I used my yoga mat I had in the car..there's something you probably don't see every day. :)

Guess this should have went under Competitions. Mods maybe want to move it?

215/300. Not great but I felt ok about it for my first time out. Really need to work on the offhand stuff..that lowered my score alot.

Ranger, you should try the search function, there is still a warm thread somewhere... welcome to THR.

as for the Garand match, thats great! Welcome to the club. Where was the match?

Howell, MI.

Definitely something I'll do again although I doubt I'll make it to Camp Perry this time around.

That sling thing still befuddles me.

Congratulations, Barbara!
I shot one of those service rifle match/clinic things a couple of years ago, it was wonderful. Lots of great guys coaching the newbys, offering tips and encouragement.
I did way better than I thought I would, better than lots of guys with ARs, even. (I shot an M1)
The sling thing is befuddling, though, my coach kept tightening that thing up, up, up. Offhand seemed a gift to me after that:D

Hooray, and Well Done!

I shot my first highpower match (in 2001) with an M1 in a light, misting rain; you've got me beat. Hey, your score beats mine, too. :D

The point is to have fun. Kudos.

You should have asked one of the Men there to help you out. I'm sure you would have shot much better then.

So. . . how long before you purchase one?

This is mine..Unfortunately, I've had it for a couple of years and this is my first match.

Didn't have to..they all volunteered. Like I'm volunteering to punch you in the head next time I see you, butthead. :)

Nice! I love bringing out my old Mosin to have some fun.... It may look like a $79 rifle, but it you REALLY look close you'll ALOT of custom stuff on it. I love sleepers.
Nice work though, keep up the good work.

I'll give you major props for shooting in that weather.

Dry firing and/or getting an adult sized air rifle to practice with indoors.... A good bolt action .22 shooting at long range (75-100 yards) at progressively smaller reactivetargets will help too- 500-1000 rounds of practice will help immensely. Putting the reactive targets on a sand berm to give you instant feedback on where you missed and later why you missed will speed up the process.

Wish I could say that I did better my first time, but I can't.

I do this exact same thing and it definately helped a lot. I also use a shooting sling on the rifle to get used to that as well. A local NRA match director invited me to try the monthly HP match, but I've been too lazy to wake up that early. Maybe I'll give it a try next month (I've owned a Garand for a few years now without shooting it in a match, as well).

I got an AR shortly afterwards and now shoot that pretty regularly instead. I'm going to try to get some practice in on the Garand this year, though.

Tell you what, John..I'll lend you the M1 and you can show me how its done in March.

I'm happy to see you are shooting the M-1 and glad to hear you are going to practice. A hint on offhand and the M-1.....keep your strong side elbow as high as you can. The other thing is wait for the shot. If you have to put the rifle down (cradle) and rest the eye then do it. Some people use a 6 o' Clock hold. For off hand I use what is called the Navy hold, or center mass. I find I call the shot much better. For every thing else I use a 6 o' Clock hold. Dry fire is a good way to help with off hand as well. Just make sure you hold the rifle the same way as you would if it were loaded. A black tack at 15 feet is about the same size as the target. Dry Fire for 20 shots every other day for a couple of months and you would smoke offhand.

Are you shooting the AR in matches as well?

John C. Garand matches are a real hoot just so you know.

Yeah, I shoot the AR in matches linked to in John (Blackhawk2000)'s signature...tactical rifle, not bullseye stuff.

Been dry firing the AR a bit the past few days..will keep you posted.

John if she shot the match with the m1, you might stand a chance of beating her.

Yeah.

..Maybe. :D

Actually, I'll have to try that some time..most courses of fire wouldn't require more than one reload..would avoid my habit of taking insurance shots.

Range time is good... plinking, competing, defensive practice, you name it, a bad day at the range is still a pretty darned good day :)

Might I recommend taking that M1 to an Appleseed shoot? They'll help you with the sling use, and anything else you might be having problems with. For solid, basic rifle training, there isn't a better program around... Bring a friend :)
