Shot my first Garand match yesterday.

Glad you had fun and sorry it was so cold. We figure that cold, wind and blowing snow gives us a better appreciation of what the soldiers who shot Garands at Bastogne and the Chosin Reservoir went through. Garand and vintage military matches are the main reason I don't kill myself in the winter.

Look over in the Competition forum for a post I started titled "My offhand scores suck!!!" People posted a lot of good advice on improving your offhand scores. That is the most humbling stage IMO. The guys I shoot with call it awfulhand, with good reason.

Cold? It was a balmy 35!

Was reading that thread..my biggest problem is I don't do pushups much anymore..gotta get back in the habit and build up the upper body strength, but will try some of the tips there, as well.

nice, congrats, did you use your own Garand?

P.S off hand is difficult and really requires some practice, but you pick up most of your points in prone and sitting positions.

A black tack at 15 feet is about the same size as the target. Dry Fire for 20 shots every other day for a couple of months and you would smoke offhand

Good for you. My wife has had hers since 1987 or so.

It's been a while but I remember shooting a match in the NW during constant, all day rain. It rained so hard that the well of the M1 started filling up with water.

We shot and pulled and pasted targets (somehow) anyway.

The sun came out after the last relay. Everything we owned was totally drenched including the rifles. Not that it affected their functioning any.

Just us.

I shot my 308 M-1 in a down pour, prone rapids during a match. The guys not shooting had a great time watching the steam come off my rifle. They were almost distracting. When I got it home it was one of the few times I've pulled the rifle out of the stock for cleaning and lube.

215/300 sounds pretty darn good to me for a first match with a gun you had only shot a few times before.I'd have been very happy with myself and my gun for doing that.

sometimes I miss MI, but then I call my mom or sister or an uncle, etc and they remind me about the freezing cold, snowy winters, and hot, humid summers, then I compare MI gun laws to OR gun laws (and the weather, which is all around better here, except for the 5 months of rain), and dont miss it quite so much anymore....
