I got a M1A Scout Squad 4-5 months back and hadn't got around to shooting it until just yesterday. I was extremely surprised at how it felt to shoot it, I have always heard stories of the M1A and how it was notorious for dislocating arms and popping ear drums but in my opinion it shoots like a dream. It didn't have hardly any kick for what it is and the sound is best described as a deep pop and not ear penetrating, my .38spl seems louder and harder on the ears in my opinion. Also, with the proprietary muzzle stabilizer on it there was hardly any flippage and was easily shot offhand. I may have to mess with the irons a little bit, as I was surprised at the fact that I was only about 80yrds out and had quite a few fliers out of the 1 box of ammo I put through it. I don't have a formiddable optic for it yet, but for the meantime I will be fine, as I personally love Irons. I have heard countless times that the M1A standard can easily reach out to 800+ yards, what can I expect from my 18in version as opposed to the 22in? What is the typical range with the Scout with the Irons? What is the max range I could acheive with a formiddable optic? I have also heard that any barrel longer than 18in for the .308 is unnessasary, and that the 18in length is the optimum length for that caliber and that I wouldn't lose much, if at all range with the 18in as opposed to the 22in, but I have a hard time with that concept, any clarification on that particular issue would be great. Any and all tips and tricks regarding the Scout would also be great, thanks

You might get a bit more range with the 22" because of the bit more velocity you'll get, longer sight radius will help in the accuracy department also.

I never found them to be very punishing rifles to shoot. The sights are quite good thats what I like about the American rifles in general, they always have good sights.
