If i want to shoot slugs does it matter what choke i have in the gun?

its a benelli nova pump and just has the choke that was installed when i bought it.

I usually use modified (as that is what is usually in the gun when I pick it up), a full choke constricts the slug too much.

Anything modified and more open should work fine, as Naybor said.

Ever seen the aguila mini slugs? Neat little slugs. Seems like the nova and supernova are the only pumps that cycle them reliably.

ddupleks look um up, they shoot awesome and can be fired with most chokes(Read Not turkey chokes)

From a sfety standpoint, it is fine to shoot slugs out of any factory choke tube. It may shoot great, or horribly, you don't know for sure until you try it. Generally, though, more open chokes will shoot slugs better.

Generally speaking, modified is as tight as you want to go..although "XYZ" brand of plain old Forster slug MIGHT be best with Full choke...Every shotgun/barrel/choke/ammo combination is a law unto itself.

I get very good performance with my Maverick 88 with a cylinder bore 18-1/2" barrel and PMC brand slugs. Shooting Budd with identical setup cannot hit barn from inside using PMC..his is best with Rem "Sluggers"

The manual with my new Mossberg 930 recommends Improved Cylinder for best results with slugs. I've tried it out with Winchester 1 oz. slugs, and it shoots to point-of-aim at 25 yards. It's important to experiment with your own gun, though; a friend's Remington 870 throws slugs about a foot to the right of P.O.A. at that distance.

I wouldn't use slugs if it was a full choke. Squeezes the slug to much.
Actually, it doesn't squeeze it at all.

A Forster slug, or any other unfired slug, is smaller in dia (.685") then a Full choke (.689").
Anyway, that is what the "rifling" vanes are for on a slug. It doesn't cause the slug to spin at all.

They are there to give the soft lead a place to go if necessay to size down in a super tight choke.

Ya know, Rcmodel, you may be absolutely right. Sounds reasonable.

But, about 40 years ago I saw with my own eyes a 12 ga 32" full choke goose gun that had the first 12" peeled like a banana skin after shooting a slug. Since then, I've never shot a slug thru a couple of full choke shotguns I've had.

My own slug gun was a 12 ga. Improved Cylinder pump slug gun. Maybe you can just say "personal preference" on my ideas about full choke and slugs.

P.S. I do respect your input and advice. Not trying to cause waves.

Seeing as how the full choke is only in the last 1 1/2" or so of the barrel?

Sounds like that long goose gun got stuck in the dirt before it got the slug shot in it.

Buy a rifled choke tube and Brenneke slugs and you have a 150 Yd range rifle. I have used Brenneke slugs for 55 yrs. and rifled choke is just a plus. I have too mane deer shot guns, but when I loan any with this combo they git the deer and don't want to give the gun back. It is not the gun but rather they know the copmbo kills and they are more confident. MHO Bob
