I want to take a tactical shotgun class but I'm unsure of what one. I haven't taken any shooting classes before. I just want something that will enhance my confidence in my shotgun use for home defense or any situation that may arise.

Does anyone have any experience or reccomendations?

Thanks- 45Guy

Y'know, we need to sticky a list so this doesn't keep coming up, or make it a 101 thread, or something like that.
---------------------------------

There are more good instructors out there now than there ever have been before. You'd have to make a real dedicated efforet (as well as being independently wealthy, footloose and fancy free) to make a dent in the list.

JMHO here of course, but:

If you don't get to Louis Awerbuck somewhere along the way, you're missing out. Louis is a trip, the grand old man of the training circuit- once you make a class with him chances are you will be back for more. Yavapai is a travelling circus- check the schedule to see if there is a class near you. I took Louis' class last year- see my review here on the board at http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=202292 .

Randy is likely one of the most under-rated of the national-class instructors out there. But he's a pro nonetheless. Randy travels also- check the schedule to see what's in the offing. Don't see any shotgun classes so far this year but he does teach the scattergun too. Keep looking.

There are LOTS more options. Take a look at http://www.alltheweb.com/search?cat...shotgun"+classes&rys=0&itag=crv&_sb_lang=pref and see if any of these are close to you.

Anyone else want to spotlight a particular instructor or class? Weigh in, please...

Practice, take up clays, hunt birds, become one with your shotgun. You can learn tactics from a class, but nothing replaces experience and shooting flying objects for marksmanship IMHO. Take a "shoot where you look" class, some marksmanship training in addition to the tactical stuff if you don't do clays or hunt birds or something. Even if you do, it can't hurt.

I don't worry much about the tactical training with a shotgun. Mine is only for my bedroom/safe room. If he breaks through the door, he's dusted with buckshot. Pretty simple, not brain surgery. If I took any tactical courses, personally, it'd be with my CCW and deal with real life self defense with my CCW.

That's all JMHO, though. I don't got a lot of money for such classes. It might be fun, but I have other expensive hobbies to fund right now, LOL! I get enough bird hunting during the season and shoot a few clays for practice during the off season that I ain't too worried about shooting a person at close range.
