I've searched but I can't seem to find a definitive answer...

I'm going to be purchasing my first shotgun in the next week/10 days. My only gun (FNP 9) was bought from a friend, so I've never been to a store to purchase a gun. Is it okay to shoulder a shotgun in a store if you aren't pointing it at people/animals?

I know this seems stupid, but I would rather know the protocol than offend people in the store. Thanks in advance!

As long as you follow 4 rules you are ok. Make sure sg is empty and pointed away from people ie. pick a spot on the wall above the counters see if it will piont like you are shooting clays or birds. Really as long as you dont sweep everyone in sight and are relatively careful you should be gtg. If in doubt ask counter help if there is an area that they prefer. My local guy has multiple stuffed trophy heads that he says to use.

And get in the habit of checking the chamber after you pick up the gun before you point it at anything.

Although every store will likely allow it, it never hurts to ask them. Something simple like "Mind if I shoulder the gun a few times while keeping it pointed in a safe direction?"

Not stupid at all, asking is the only way to get your question answered.

I agree with the posts above, follow the safe firearm handling rules and when not 110% sure, ask.

Good luck in your purchase.

As others have mentioned, it's generally fine - but definitely ask first. Some shops get touchy about folks handling certain firearms, especially if they don't know you and your skill level with firearms.

It is good that you ask. And another reminder to follow the 4 rules. There is nothing more disconcerting that being swept by some idiot in a gun store, especially when I was not around or close enough to have seen that the chamber was empty.

The corner of the ceiling and two walls make for a safe point of aim. If you don't sweep anyone in the process of shouldering you should be fine.
