shot 3-gun competition today. it was shotgun day. unfortunately ran into the same problem i had last time: i had a hard time accurately placing long range (ca. 40-50 yards) shots with slugs.

i think the main problem is that my shotgun, winchester 1300 defender, does not have any sights, only a "fiber optic" front sight, and that's it.

i would like to put some better sights on it to make those long-range shots more accurate.

what kind of options are there? what price range? how difficult to install? pros and cons from your experience?

your input would be appreciated.

What type of barrel?

Are you shooting through a smooth bore or rifled barrel?

That might be a reason your accuracy isn't as good as you like.

That's also a pretty decent shot for a slug.

Maybe look into a rifled barrel with open sights. That would probably help.

it's a winchester 1300 defender, smooth barrel, 18 inches long.

the three stages we shot were very different. one we used bird shot to shoot some clays, one we used buckshot to shoot paper and metal poppers, one we used slugs to shoot metal poppers and moving targets.

i was using pmc rifled slugs.

i prefer to keep the barrel and add sights to it.

Well, most high end tactical shotguns come with Ghost ring sights. (try wilson combat for one example)
That's what is on my 870P, although I'll be honest, my slugs shoot low and right, but i've figured that out.
Have you gone to the range to see where your slugs fly?
i've also noticed that different brands of slugs shoot way differently in the same shotgun.

Ghost rings will help alot. Get 'em for about $100+/-; trijicon, wilson combat etc.

How big are the targets that you are expected to hit at 40-50 yards? I can hit paper plate size targets all day long with my 12ga, 20ga, and .410 shotguns with just Bradley white front beads and a center brass bead with slugs at that range.
