Where and how do you store your HD shotgun? I have my SLP and 500 in the safe and was thinking, the whole reason I have them is for a close range emergency such as HD. Do you put them in the safe when you leave and then take them out every night?
Currently I only keep 2 guns outside the safe (other than the cheap Mosin-Nagants in the ammo closet). I carry my G26 and have the USP45f in the nightstand. Obviously none of us are expecting any home invasions in our nice suburban neighborhoods, but I got to thinking that I'd much rather have a shotty in such a case (reading that self-defense post about the dogs).
I don't have kids. I have a gf who is fine with the pistols and probably wouldn't want a shotgun leaning against my bed. I was thinking in the bedroom closet or behind the bedroom tv loaded with empty chamber.

Do you have kids? I keep mine in the closet loaded with empty chamber. I have a nite stand gun but in all actuality how quick can u use a sg in some of the fancy set ups. I think the closet is fine. I sure hope manchack is still safe.

I keep my 870 "cruiser ready" (loaded magazine, empty chamber, safety on) and under my side of the bed. I live alone save for girlfriend occassionly staying over so I don't really worry about a kid finding it. If am on vacation it goes in the safe.

Discard the idea of a nice neighborhood without invasions or trouble.

Stop thinking warm, safe thoughts because of nice area. Stop that right now.

This is not Mr Rogers Neighborhood where everything nice happens.

You need to be tuned towards early warning and reaction to the problem when/if it occurs.

You seem to be from Atlanta, That is a major city and if something like a hurricane leaves the place without power and water, looters come looking maybe. LEO's might not be availible.

Time to school and learn your laws regarding home defense.

Cheers and best of luck!

I've seen a rack made by one company (sorry, I can't find a url) that has the rack slip between mattress and box springs. It hangs over the side and cradles the SG. When the bed is made-up in the morning the covers cover (how convenient) the SG so it is out of sight. Shouldn't be too hard to fab up something like that.

I have always figured that I'd have a few seconds' warning when the Total Breakdown of Civil Society occurred. So I keep handguns handy and long guns locked up (easy to get to, though).

Then again, people in Idaho are not the sort who are looking for any excuse to sink into violent anarchy. I'm REALLY not too concerned about a natural disaster leading to any mass shootings right off. In some places, I would be.

I keep my 12 ga. "cruiser ready," but with an A-Zoom cap in the chamber, thus allowing me to drop the hammer prior to "storage." The SG is kept locked up in a Santa Cruz gunlock during the day, which is then unlocked at night. However, my handgun (kept in an undisclosed location) is usually my "go to" weapon for now, with the SG being saved for "barricade" (for the lack of a better word) use. No children here, so I can afford to be a bit less "creative" for now.
