Here's another one for you familiar with laws in Alaska:

I will be visiting/moving to Alaska at some point and I am an avid hiker. I'd like to bring my 12ga. shotgun with me, but I am not sure if it is legal to carry it in the woods (although not nat'l parks, of course).

I have heard you need a special permit to hunt with a shotgun, and I am curious what it takes to get that permit as well as how they differentiate my carring a shotgun for defense as opposed to carrying it for hunting-- meaning I may have to have the hunting permit just in case?

Anyone understand what I'm asking? Furthermore, does anyone have an answer?

Thanks, all!

You can carry a .50 BMG Ackley Improved with a high capacity rotary magazine up here if you're inclined to do so. :D No one is going to care unless you're doing something stupid.

There are no restrictions on carrying of firearms in the woods, on the rivers or just tooling down the road up here. As a matter of fact it's recommended that you do so and expected that you probably will.
Outside of handguns, shotguns are probably the most commonly carried firearm by residents and non-residents alike.

No one will question you on the hunting/defense issue unless there is something obvious like feathers or webbed feet sticking out of your pack. In that case interested parties might ask to see a hunting license and such.

Even as a non-resident visiting the state, you can legally carry open or a concealed handgun without a permit. Alaska also recognizes and honors all out-of-state CCW permits.

You can't carry any firearm on Nazi Park Circus lands as the ParkStaatsPolizei would take offense. I prefer stay away from the national parks anyway.

Oh yeah..........Welcome to the Great Land. Enjoy your stay. ;)
