I was on my way home from the range when I stopped at Academy. I looked at their Maverick 88 and Mossberg 500 shotguns. I asked for comparisons between these two when the salesman told me about the HR Pardner Pump (which I have had for several months). Curious, I asked him why he brought it up. He felt that the HR is a better made gun than the Mossberg 500 and the Maverick 88.

Aside from the fact that the HR is made in China, what are your opinions based on real experience as far as quality and functionality between all three models is concerned?

Thanks!

I can't help you with the 88 or the HR, but my 500 has been through quite a bit, hasn't failed yet. The only complaint I have about the gun is that the action isn't as smooth as some guns, but for the price I paid, I have no problem with it. The gun is also pretty simple in design so disassembly and reassembly isn't hard for anyone with some basic knowledge of firearms. I can't tell you which one is best, but the 500 is a fine field gun, not much for the eye, but again great field gun.

When i bought my Mossy 88 the guy at Academy tried to push the HR too. He didn't even know it was made in China till I showed him the "Made in China" stamp on the side of the gun. All things being equal, why buy a gun that supports the Chicoms when you can get a Mossberg that was made in Eagle Pass Texas?? The 88 is a great gun and Mossberg has good customer service and a long history of supplying shotguns for the US armed forces. Plus the 88 has parts that are interchangable with the 500.

Ive owned a Mossberg 500 for about 18 months and have put maybe 6000 shells through it, and its exactly the same as when I started.

Anyway, I'm English, but all the same to me Id MUCH rather buy something made in a country I consider to be cousins, than a country like China, even if the quality and everything is the same, which I bet it wouldnt be.

Agreed. The Mossberg is a proven, good gun. It's made in the USA. They'll support their customers. And it's cheap.

Hard to imagine a good reason to buy a Chinese knock-off shotgun. Academy probably makes more off them, that's why they're "better."

1. The salesman was trying to sell you a gun in which he makes a bigger profit margin.

2. Not liking China aside, I would always rather buy something made in the USA than anywhere else, when at all possible. Besides, with all the products being recalled which were made in China, do you really trust them?

3. The Mossberg 500 is a time tested shotgun that is totally reliable and will last a very long time. (as will the other American Classic, the Remington 870)
