I have been debating the whole pump vs. semi auto thing for a couple weeks now. I have 870s, FN SLPs, and Benelli M1S90s.

I have trained with the 870 pump in a couple shooting schools. I have personally short shucked the pump under stress. I have seen numerous students AND teachers short shuck the pump under stress.

Alternatively, my M1S90 jammed big time duck hunting today after just one box of shells. It took me a good 20-30 seconds to fix it.

Both pumps and semi shotguns each have advantages. However, I have come to the conclusion that I will NEVER rely ONLY on any shotgun. They are just not dependable enough - stress induced short shuck or semi auto malfunctions are just too common.

I like the shotgun for the massive stopping power it has. Up close for home defense there is no equal. But, if I have a shotgun in my hands, I will have a handgun on my side.

Not a bad idea, but I have made my mind up also. I have recently decided to go with a Benelli M2.

BTW, I've also had "reliable" handguns jam. It happens.

Hey, do what works for you.

But, I hope you don't rely on anything to be absolutely 100%. That is why we train for malfunctions. Some may do it less than others, but it will still happen eventually. Hopefully, it won't do it when we REALLY need it.

I like the M2 also, but mine needs full power loads (not reduced "tactical" loads) to function properly.
