Looking for a good source of shotshells reloading data. I bought the Ballistic Products Advantage manual it is really great, as long as you have their brand of wads and hulls they sell... Got Remington hulls and claybuster wads? It's not a part of their "5,860 load recipes". Is there a good source of data for Remington 3" hulls and steel shot out there that anyone has stumbled across? I've tried the Hodgdon site and the only data for 3" Remington hulls is for buckshot, and they don't tell you what kind of gas seal or wads are used just a powder charge.

Lyman Shotshell Manual.

Bar none, the best manual for new shotshell loaders.

If you want good steel recipes not in that book, I'd consider some of the "high speed steel" manuals offered at BPI reloading.

I heard there was a lot of good info in there. I've been reloading and casting for years and just recently started loading shotshells. Bought a used ancient MEC 600 Jr. and I've been having a good time making buckshot loads to fool around with. I'd like to get some good steel loads to add to my inventory. I've got 1000 Remington 3" hulls so it seems logical to use them. Thanks for the reply.

Whose powder are you using? Go to their website and find your data. Cb wads are clones of someone's, use OEM data. Gun Clubs hulls use the same Remington data as the majority of other Remington hulls.

Alliant "STEEL" powder

Loading steel loads in 3" hulls is a challenge even for an experienced loader. Once Alliant came out with STEEL powder, good velocity was obtainable. By that I mean real useful velocity, and by that I mean in the 1500 fps area. Before that you might be able to get to 1350 with a few 1 1/8 ounce 3" payloads. Now 1-¼ ounce payloads in 3" rem hulls at 1500 is possible.

BUT you WILL have to buy wads, shot and the steel loading manual from BPI Also don't even bother to try to run steel shot through a charge bar. Just weigh out the shot, it don't work well when run through a charge bar.

I could go on for another 1k words to give out tips on non-toxic shot loads, but hardly no one would be interested. If you want more info, PM me with specific ???'s

A minor correction...

The manual I have from BPI is entitled " Lightning Steel", but it does not look like it is available anymore ? ITs only about 15 pages long. I apologize for flubbing the title, I was at work and away from my library :D

Its a great resource, if you can find a copy on the web.

If you are unable to do so, please shoot me an instant message, I may have another copy lying around....

I've tried the powder mfr. sites and Alliant has only one load for 3" Rem hulls with a 1-1/4 oz load, Hodgdon has none for Rem 3". I only currently have Unique and 800x for powders. I'm waiting to grab some Steel powder and shot/wads. Just looking for a good source of published data. I don't think I want the BPI manual as I'm guessing they won't have data for Remington 3" hulls as it wasn't in their Advantages manual.

I also just started reloading shot shells after years of loading brass, to make more of a challenge I shoot only 16 ga. the lyman manual is a most have, gives you info on the different powder bushings needed for your mec. I bought a used mec 600 jr and lee load all cheap from a guy that did not shot 16 ga, I use universal powder, so hogdon has a lot of load recipes. I like universal since I also use it for .40s&w. so far my best load for trap is the rem hull, claybuster winchester clone wad, winchester primers, universal powder and #8 shot
