Am consideing firing some shotshells in my .357 and wondered if shooting them does any damage to the rifling.

Jeff

Won't damage it but it will probably lead like crazy...and as was said range will be VERY short.

Keep in mind a shotgun just spits a blob of pellets out the barrel. But when you shoot pellets in a RIFLED BARREL, then they get the spin treatment with the rifling and when they come out, they are going gaa-gaa everywhich way.

The rifling won't be damaged, but it will catch some of the shot and you get some zingers that end up way outside the main body of the pattern. Yep, the range is short, but the shot is very small. Obviously it won't be a good duck load, but a lot of folks like it for being a good snake load.

Double Naught Spy: I laughed till I cried. I can see my father-in-law's face

when I whip out the .357 in the duck blind.

shotshells

richochet speaketh the truth. he knows his stuff.

tompson center sold barrels with screw on/off chokes to stop the spin on the shot and straighten it out. still wouldn't think it would be a good choice for ducks. ;)

Well, you gotta call in the ducks really, really close. Don't expect penetration of the shot beyond the distance of the powder smoke discharge.

It also works well for rats, but the the trouble is getting the rats loaded into the throwing machine.

I took a herpetology class back in the late 80s. The instructor always started off class with some sort of bizarre stories. More often than not, the story was some stupid human trick. Several of the stories were wehre people peppered their own feet or legs, or those of a buddy, when encountering snakes. It is not wise to try shooting a snake that is between your legs. With these little shot shells, you could get enough spread to hit both feet at once!

I have carried shot for snakes on several trips out into west Texas and New Mexico and never had to shoot a snake. Usually, I just end up picking a target to demonstrate to a buddy just what sort of crazy spread comes out of a .45 acp shot shell from a 3.16" Kimber barrel. I keep buying the stuff and it ends up just being a novelty. Of course, I like to look where I am stepping BEFORE I step.
