I voted Military only, not that I don't think LEO's deserve a discount, just that if they don't get one then the store could offer a bigger one to us military guys :D hehehehehe

I voted yes.

It's their store and if a dealer feels like giving out discounts, more power to them.

Its thier choice, I personally would not. Then again, I don't think any profession should be held higher then any other. I see no diffrence from the guy digging ditchs to feed his family then the guy that only works in a nice clean office.

I'm military. If a place gives it, I'll take it. Is it owed to me anywhere? No. Is it nice when I get one? Yes.

Here's a BS scenario though:
Local range is about the only place to buy any reasonable range of weapons. Any military OTHER than Navy, LEO, firefighters, medics, etc., get a discount. I tell everyone that I work with to avoid that place like the plague. Buy bullets anywhere else, buy guns anywhere else, only shoot there if you don't have time to drive to one of the other ranges.

I do like to go there and handle/look at guns, then buy them somewhere else and come back in with the same gun that I didn't buy there.

I vote military only, leo in my state should have to get new what the rest of us get [nothing very soon].I encourage the manufactures to take Ronnie Barret's stand. If it really hurts maybe they'll change
You can't fix dumb.

Here is my idea, I am ok with little extras like say if a LEO or Military buys a gun they get a free box of ammo. Nice little extra.

However I see no reason to give a discount to agencies unless its a quantity deal.

Now if gun makers want to deal like glock does then I am ok with that.

Here is how I feel, while I am supportive of LEO's, EMS and any other civil servants if they are buying a luxury gun I don't see the need to give them a discount. I would rather make a deal with the guy that works armed security for 12/hr and needs a cheap duty gun. I guess I draw the line at if its a pure fun gun.

As for NRA or GOA discounts thats fine, don't really care either way. BUT what about something like this, a gun store runs a promotion that everybody who writes a letter to a state legislator on a key gun bill gets $20 off their next purchase over $200. Then your promoting our cause in a really great way.

As for the Ronnie Barrett position I VERY much respect him for that and think that he should be applauded by all of us.

It is really up to the business owner. I'm in LE, and I really appreciate some of the special pricing that I can get on guns. Honestly, I think these prices are really made available to us through agreements that the merchant has with the manufacturer (Blue label Glocks, for example).

Anyway, I think it can certainly work to the seller's advantage. The local police supply store in this area gives a decent price on the guns they sell to cops. But, they also sell leather, holsters, accessories, and every other imaginable piece of police equipment. As such, they might lower the price on the gun, but they sure make up for it when you go to buy the rest of your gear.

My department provides us with a belt, pepper spray w/ a holster, a radio, one set of handcuffs, a glove pouch, and our uniform shirt/pants. We also get an allowance towards our ballistic vests, but mine was still an extra $250 out-of-pocket.

When I started I was also required to buy: Gun, holster, flashlight, flashlight holder, belt keepers, radio holder, SAP, boots, baton ring, under belt, etc. These items add up quickly, so the gun discount was much appreciated when I was a rookie!

Yes to Military, they actually serve the people well. No to cops. I acted in self defense with one of my firearms once, gave all the evidense to the police, multiple witness reports in my favor, but for kicks I was charged and jailed for it while my attacker was set free. not to mention the entire department treating me like crap. the only thing I hate worse than a cop is two of them mfers. and if you dont like my stance, well thats just tough

BTW Charges were droped when evidense was presented in court

From each according to their ability, to each according to their need.

Now, if the question is, "should regular folks be able to voluntarily pay into a kitty that would fund giving cops and military a 10% discount, without running afoul of the strawman laws?", the answer is yes.

I don't think so because any thing that there buying is for own use not for work and only drives up prices for everyone else. Ever see a cop buy is own ammo for work. Here even there second gun ammo is furnished. Only drives up prices for everyone else.

"To give a LE or military person a discount for a gun used for personal use doesn't quite seem right to me."

They can give them a free gun for all I care; it's their gun to give away.

What's next, no more free coffee for cops?

i voted yes. but i think that the only way you could own a non-issue gun in the armed services would be if you lived off base. personaly, if i owned a gun store, i would offer a discount to nra members as well. with a sign outside that said, "WE SUPPORT LAW ENFORCEMENT, MILITARY, AND NRA MEMBERS" and "DOUBLE DISCOUNTS FOR RETIRED OR LIFE MEMBERS". but that is me, and since i don't actually own a store, it is easy for me to say that. but seriously, the guys / gals who keep us safe, and fight for our freedoms deserve some credit.

Whatever the gun shop's owner wants.

I don't quite understand having a poll about this since people are free to run their small businesses as they see fit.

Whatever the shopowner wants.

That said, I'll tend to frequent a dealer who has a hookup for me... and given the spending habits of a lot of young military guys, it seems like it would make pretty good business sense to be known around the barracks as "the guy with the hookup for soldiers/sailors/Marines/airmen".

If a shop owner jacks his prices up 20%, in able to give the military a 15% discount, that's really not much of a deal. It reminds me of car dealerships, and its insulting.

On the other hand I have a friend who only charges 10% over everything he sells, including guns, ammo, and accessory's.... for everyone.

It should be up to the proprietor to decide what he wants to do. You want to support our military and LE, why don't you donate money to one of the numerous organizations that help them. Why should someone else have to take money out of his pocket, just because you think he should? Your idea of having Gun Shops give discounts, would be the same as having your paycheck garnished every week to go directly into to a soldier or cops pocket.

Maybe not a bad idea, but it should be theirs to decide.

I don't know if someone has covered this, but it is the manufacturers who offer these discounts. IIRC, S&W, Springfield, Beretta, FN Herstal, etc. offer discounts to military, LE, and a number of other public service personnel.

The dealer would only be passing on those discounts to the appropriate customers.

We all appreciate your choice to serve in the military or your choice to be a cop....but I don't see how that creates an obligation for someone to sell you guns at a discount. If you need it for work, don't the manufacturers have programs?
Again...serving in the military is great, but others may serve to make the world a better place in other ways. If a gun dealer chosses to show his personal appreciation, great....but any thought of insisting that the should is not one I can wrap my mind around in a free society.

A business can offer whatever discount the owners want, for whatever reasons they want.

And I, as a customer, can and WILL evaluate whether I will take my business elsewhere.

If I perceive that a store is charging me too much, I won't shop there.

If they're charging me too much, to cover arbitrary discounts for other people (whoever they are), I will do my best to make sure that none of my friends shop there, either.

I think some people are answering the following question...

Should Gun Stores be obligated to discount purchases made by Military/LE?

I read the question as...

Should Gun Stores have the freedom to offer discounts to...

And I answered yes.

I voted yes.

I'd like to point out though,
if a dealer offers discounts across the board,
it tends to make ALL the customers return.

A personal example is a local music shop
that marks up their prices on the merchandise
and when you get to the register,
they take off anywhere from 15- 50%.

Even though I know it's a gimmick.
It works and has me going there to buy most musical supplies
we use on a regular basis. i.e. drum sticks, guitar strings,
accessories, etc...

It makes me feel 'special'.

It shouldn't be mandatory, as we're talking about private enterprises, but I think it would be a nice idea.

This brings up a different question, though: why not have the gov't give soldiers and LE an allowance towards their personal (non-issue) weapons and ammo? Maybe set up as a rebate. Those people could probably use the extra perk.

"If a shop owner jacks his prices up 20%, in able to give the military a 15% discount, that's really not much of a deal."

If it's too expensive FOR WHATEVER REASON don't shop there. See, that was easy.

Sheesh.

What's with all the hate for discounts? Is everybody against Ladies Night at the local bar too?

Or is it just hate for civilian police and the military?
