The local gun store “fly”

For the life of me I can’t imagine why anybody would want to hang around a gun shop.
Where would you find the time? I’ve been retired for 5 years and I’m busier than when I worked.

Father in law says the same thing. Me roughly 2 years away and I can't wait to find out myself.

I am with you on that Duke when I was on the job I longed for the day I could just stay in bed until 0700 and get up eat a real breakfast and read the paper. Been retired 11 years still get up at 0500 drink one hurried cup of coffee walk the hound come back in wake the old lady up and watch the news for about 15 minutes then go out in the garage and fix whatever I did not get to the day before.

I've been retired for only 5 months, and I'm finding out the same thing.

But I do visit a couple of my LGSs every week or so to drink some bad coffee and b1tch about our governor, attorney general and legislature (the wife won't let me vent about this stuff at home, especially since she still works ten hour days). Every now and then, I look at a gun...

Turners was NO place to hang out ( especially in Esc. ) ,it's or was an overpriced retailer with sub par sales personnel , IMO .

There are #3 things every perspective retiree needs to know . #1 The Jobs NEVER finished !. #2 You have a New Boss and SHE has more dept.'s of necessary maintenance and New projects ,than #3 life long employee's can fulfill . #3 YOU are paying for the PRIVILEGE of WORKING for yourself and the really BAD news is ,YOU'RE also paying for the entire Job . FYi : There's NO paycheck and NO one else to blame if and when the job goes awry .

Here's a Tip ; It's a MARATHON and Not a sprint ,Last place is the desired position . With that in mind carefully PLAN YOUR strategy ,so as Not to end up like the ones before ; marked with Headstones

I've had that kind of icy treatment in two gunstores, possibly because of my ponytail.

I would not intervene in a conversation unless asked.

When I had my electronics store, I had two barstools on the customer's side of the counter for BS-ing purposes. Hams love to ragchew, and I'm sure it was good for business. I think there's a genetic component of being a Ham. But I was always alert to when a customer even looked like he wanted something. My BSees and BSers understood that.

I did get corrected at one gun store when I looked around and "found" a safe place to shoulder a rifle at. Clerk stopped me and pointed out a big bullseye posted high on the wall way at the other end of the store as a safe direction.

Doncha just hate it when you try to do the right thing but it's wrong anyway?

Here in NJ the State Police took over the background checks some years ago. You pay, fill out the forms, the shop notifies you when your background check comes through-usually 3-4 days.
Kinda redundant, considering they ran the background check for your FPID and again for your Permit to Purchase. Of course, it is NJ.

Happens to the best of us, and when we are not familiar with the shop....or anything mistakes could be made. How those mistakes are addressed it also important.

I wonder how many LGS owners have actually studied up on running a store and customer relations. The industry magazines are full of stories on how to do that in modern times.

I recall going to a counter and having listen to a long diatribe as the clerk was denouncing his daughter for voting for Obama and how he was going to disown her. She wouldn't inherit his 'ranch'. Blah, blah.
I left. Maybe Prince Harry can run a gun store.

Here in Phoenix, my LGS was a place to go to and shop, only 3 aisles wide, archery, leather, COMPONENTS (powder, all kinds of primers, brass'n bullets), reloading tools and accessories, airgun, 50 ft of display cases with handguns and a few scopes'n sights. Walls behind counters loaded with long guns.

I never new personnel names, but I felt good shopping there, always had what I needed, and special ordered buddy's handgun.

Last time I went there, there was a sign on the door saying they had moved two doors down to the corner. New digs are bright with all the corner windows, like walking into a Walgreen's or CVS. Lots of accessories, open floorspace, no one I recognized, all but two appeared to be under 25-30 and were more interested in talking together than what I maybe wanted. Never been back. Now my LGS is Sportsman's Whse.

Wish I had been able to spend more to support my old LGS.
