Hello everyone, this is kind of my first post so be kind. I am just wondering if it is practical to add another caliber to my collection. I have been recently hit with a bad case the gun buying fever :banghead: and the next thing I am looking at is an AK47 variant, probably a Saiga. Heres what I have so far

Mossberg 12ga
Savage 7mm
Winchester 30-30
CMMG Bargain Bin M4 .223
Taurus 605 .357
Ruger 22/45 MkIII .22
Savage rifle .22
Mosin Nagant M91-30

So I guess what I am really asking here is should I add 7.62x39 to my collection? I know that I am the only one who can make the final decision, I just wanted a few of your opinoins of wether or not I should buy one. I might be looking at a .308 as well as a .45 acp and a 9mm . What do you guys think? Oh an I really dont want this to turn into a .223 Vs. 7.62 thread cause that has been done to death.

Yes, by all means.

AKs are wonderful and the round excellent. There are also SKSs and some bolt action rifles such as the CZ 527 that chamber the round.

.223 and x39 go together well, imo.

Welcome and enjoy.

Do you even have to ask? Anytime you're thinking about getting another gun, get it. And if you're trying to decide between two, get em both:D

Yes, the 7.62x39 AK type carbine is something every gun enthusiast should have in their collection. I now have two

K, well Im sold. My only problem is I am very indecisive but at the very same time I occasionally make quick decisions on big purchases. I will probably definately pick up a Saiga, but I dont have the time or resources to convert it anytime soon since Im still in college. What else should I be looking at? Should I just get a WASR-10?

With respect to WASR-10 owners I would recommend a Yugo M70. It’s not much more expensive and the one I own has been excellent.

This man is wise. After all, this IS a gun board. Unless it's a real P.O.S., we're gonna tell you to buy it :D

Yeah. Get one. Ammo isn't brutally expensive yet. The firearms that use it aren't that expensive, either. However, it's hard to find really good stuff for it when it comes to reloading, if you're into that. If you DO take it up for reloading at some point (might be wise... though don't bother saving up spent rounds, most of the brass/steel is Berdan primed), make DAMN sure that you get the right diameter of bullet. Most of the Russian guns have a bore diameter of .311" instead of the American standard of .308". If you get a Mini- 30, you should use the .308" bullets instead of the .311" and vice- versa for the Russian guns.

I'm actually considering picking up a Handi-Rifle in 7.62x39mm as my next longarm.

Whenever that is. :(

Get a yugo SKS, shoots about anything and is a lot of fun. Accuracy is not that great with wolf, but could probably improve over the 5" 100 yard groups with quality ammo.

If you are looking for a bolt action CZ has a nice offering that has good reviews.

I currently have 26 different calibers in my collection, and have plans for plenty more, so It might not be wise to listen to me, but I dont think theres anything wrong with having lots of different calibers.Keeping a supply of ammo on hand for all of them does get kinda pricey though....

JShirley...when did they start making handi-rifles in x39?!?!?

This would be an interesting little rifle, IMO. :)

Oh...and to the OP...hell yeah get one.:D

Of course, if you want one, but...

I'm gonna be the oddball here and say, strictly as another caliber, no.

The list you put up doesn't have much overlap really. The 7mm and the 7.62x54R are the two closest I saw, and, well, one of the guns is a Mosin. Which isn't a knock, I love mine. But one typically does not buy a Mosin-Nagant and a Remington for the same reasons.

The 7.62x39 and .30-30 are actually quite close, ballistically. I'd even give the general-purpose nod the to .30WCF, based on bullet weight. If you don't have a ton of velocity to work with, and you don't in either case, go for bullet weight.

So, as a cartridge, I don't see the 7.62x39 getting you anywhere you're not already at.

OTOH, the guns are very different. You can't get an AK in .30-30, and you can't get a 7.62x39 levergun. So if what you really want is an AK, you're taking on the additional cartridge as part of the deal.

If it's a gun thing, get it and shoot it and be happy. If it's a cartridge thing, I wouldn't bother.
