He carried it for some 35 years in a local Sheriff's Department here in Pennsylvania. He got the job a few years after WWII and was issued that revolver new. I also have the old black service holster he carried which happens to be a little too long for the revolver. It's made for a 6" revolver instead of the 4" revolver he carried. He is a really nice old-timer with a lot of stories to tell. I listen to them as often as I can.

Id leave it as is. My one gripe about my Smith M15 is it looks too nice to carry around. Id hate to scratch the thing up. But if it already had some wear and tear on it, I wouldnt mind the thing going hiking with me.

Warts on a gun are no excuse to chop it up. Warts tell a story even if you have to use your imagination.

Go ahead and cut it up. Slice that barrel with a hacksaw and take a bastard file to it. Then take an oversize drill bitt to the muzzle to give her a nice accuracy crown using a hand drill. Then take those old junk grips and use 'em as fire starters in your BBQ. Scrub the finish with a Brillo pad and spray paint the gun with Testor's flat black model paint.

When you're done, don't ever post here again.

YECCH! Perish the thought.

Wow, I'm late to this thread, but I'll throw out my two cents.

I wouldn't alter that one personally, because you can find a gun that is similar to what you want for less than the total cost of the project.

However, there is an old gun I would 'mutilate' if given a chance. If I found a refinished, post-war, long action M&P for a dirt cheap price, I would chop the barell to three inches, chamfer the charge holes, bob the hammer, parkerize, and convert the square butt to round.

I like DAO revolvers for carry, and the S&W long actions have the best double action trigger I've fired. Also, the configuration I would like was not made, but I can dream.
