If you really don't care for a 357, then don't buy it. Sell the ammo you have and buy a caliber that you will enjoy.

I'd buy the GP-100 in 357 mag and keep it. I think it does make a better "truck gun" than a single action regardless of caliber. Hopefully it will shoot closer to point of aim than the 3". I have a 3" that I like, but it is purely for close range stuff as far as I'm concerned.

I'm not totally enamored with the 357 mag caliber either, but I have the GP-100 and a Colt Trooper Mark III in the caliber. Love the Colt. Off hand, I think that's it in 357 although I might have another couple tucked away somewhere that I forgot about. Come to think of it, I do. They are effectively safe queens.

haha...touche ;)

for me, the .44mag is more of the ".30-06 of handgun cartridges". loaded to full potential to take larger game, but easily loaded down if need be.
I'd equate the .44 Mag to a .375 H&H, since even downloaded it can be a little intimidating, and properly loaded there's precious little a .44 Mag can't take care of. Much like the .375.

A .357 Mag downloaded is the pussycat .38 Special. Likewise, a downloaded .30-06 is a pussycat .30-30, really.

To the OP: You don't like calibers that start with .3 . Your question is answered. Don't bother with the GP in .357 if you can have another in .44 Special/magnum/.45-something.

I now have a few S&W 627s and both a 686P and a 66 - and I am not so fond of 'real' .357 Magnums. I bought mine new, so they were tested with 'real' .357 Magnums. I reload, so I load wimpy .357 Magnums - .38 Specials in the .357 Magnum cases. Why? I like the confidence it will shoot .38 Specials - even +P's - all day long. And also, because I have never seen a seven or eight shot .38 Special! I did discover .38's late in life - some 11.5 yr ago - long after .45 ACP/Colt and .454C - then .44 Special/Russian/Magnum... finally, .38 & .357M.

While I never have bought - or made - a true .357 or .44 Magnum round, I shot hundreds of 'real' .454's - most over 2,000 ft-lb KE. I guess I got the loudenboomer/big kick out of my system, as I traded that .454 SRH over nine years ago (I have the hearing and wrist damage to prove it!). In any case... I now love the .38 Special - and my wimpy .357 Magnum loads. I'd get a .357 Magnum - preferably a S&W - but, by all means, get an adjustable sight! That 3" GP-100 was too far off, no matter the distance. That was too far off for a Vaquero, even! Good luck with your decision... you know, as long as you keep the ammo for later use, trade, etc, you'll have a great outcome!

I'm not going to read the O.P.
The answer to this question is always YES.

Get the GP. If you don't like the round after shooting a few speedloaders worth, send it to custom maker and get a GP in 44 special.
