I have a 7.62 x 39 should i get a 5.45 x 39??? I know it cheap now (ammo)
but its a flater shooting round. My range is only 200 yards. Pro's and con's please.
Thanks
P.s I will be using Bush's buyout money for it.

I don't think its an issue of "chasing the ammo price", I would recommend a 5.45 AK-74 clone simply because its a great rifle to own. I was in the same boat, I already had an SAR-1 and Russian SKS but kept reading about the AK-74 in Afghanistan and Chechnya and became intrigued. :scrutiny:

I got an AK-74 sidefolder from ORF and love it! :) I would highly recommend one. It is accurate and the recoil is crisp and smooth. The round is much flatter shooting.

The cons- mags are not as cheap as they once were. A year ago I got four East German bakelites for $8 each. I also got four Russian plums from ORF for $55 (total) before they raised the price to $90. Right now prices can be as high as $20 to $25 for an East German 5.45 mag.

There is a big "5.45 ammo is going up" scare- the main reason people say that is Century dropped their sale. I think Century is seeing if people continue to buy it at the same rate with the price higher. You can still get cheap 5.45 from several other vendors, in fact rguns is cheaper than Century:

Honestly, even if 5.45 goes up to $200 a tin, that is still cheap compared to other rounds. Think about .308, .45, or 5.56.

For a great AK-74 I'd go with ORF:

The Tantals are nice too, but make sure you are ok with the wire stock (lack of a cheek weld). Good luck.
