Should the rear sight be centered or not for right handed shooter??

My P239 just got fitted with Sig nightsights. The armorer wanted to know if I still wanted them centered to the left, since I am a right handed shooter.

I have only shot this gun once so I asked him to center them to the right as he suggested, since this is how they are supposed to be. I have never heard of this. He says since a trigger pull is actually to one side and not back this counteracts it?

Is this correct? I tried another forum site but only got one response. Anyone know any diferent? Attached you will find a pic of my 229 with the sights installed center, and a 239 with the sights to the right.

Does your P239 shoot POA with the sights zeroed like that? How about your P229?

I've installed a couple of sets of night sights on my SIG's, and each time, I used the "witness mark" on the tool to set the sights. They all shot POA first time out and didnt need to be adjusted anymore afterwords.

Never heard of the right hand left hand thing.

With my 229 (centered sights) I usually shoot a little bit to the left but have learned to correct this. I will try the new sights out on the 239 and see what happens without having to compensate.

Adjust the rear sight to sooot to POA FOR YOU. That is why the sight is drift adjustable! I wouldn't listen to the "armorer".

I'm right-handed, but left-eye dominant. When I shoot with my right eye closed, I hit where I'm aiming, but if I keep both eyes open, I shoot a little to the left.

There is something about the "cross-eyed" focus on the front sight that screws things up for me. I wonder whether it is a handedness thing or a dominant-eye thing.

I agree with huntershooter, the sights should be adjusted to you, if they dont shoot where you look when mechanically zeroed. To do this, you do really need the tool with you while you shoot to do the adjustments. I would not recommend beating on night sights with a drift and hammer. The tool that installs the sights will also gently adjust them, and with a little more precision than the punch, nights sights or not.

If you own a couple of SIG's, (if you do, you know of the addiction, and more will be coming ) the tool is worth the cost, especially if you have older night sights or want to replace standard sights. I've bought a couple of used guns with both old night sights and standard sights, which I've changed out for new Mepro's. You can get the sights on line for reasonable, about $65/70, and you can often sell the old ones on EBay, for about half that, making it even more economical.

MGW makes a tool that is the same as the one SIG sells, for about half the money. It will do all but the polymer framed SIGs and the P230/P232's.

All 3 of my Glocks have the rear sight off center to the right neener: OK so much for PERFECTION!). That is what it takes for those weapons to shoot straight. My 1911 is dead center, as is the High Power.

Then again never asked myself or been asked this question by another.

Looking at Model 10, 64, 36 and 37- These seem to be centered smack-dab in the center.

Couldnt shoot straight with my 239, so now sights are centered and so are my shots.

Thanks to all. I wont trust that gunsmith again, he tried to tell me my sig is due for its thorough cleaning and disassembly (he charges $100), it only has maybe 200 rounds through it. Go figure.

That's what the adjustment is for. Eye dominance, amount of finger you use on the trigger, grip, and a bunch of other stuff can effect where that sight shluld be for you.

Center means Center, not left or right. The sights should be centered until you shoot the gun and find out where it shoots.

You'd better try and find the old Sears-Roebuck blinker fluid on Ebay. It's the only stuff that works for a long time. The EPA's 1997 regs made modern blinker fluid half as efficient at it used to be.

I always reverse my sights. Notch on the front, blade on the back - that renders offsetting left or right null and void. I learned it in the SEALS when they gave me my Desert Eagle in .50BMG for concealed carry for defending the Mall against Chechen terrorists.

Seriously, sounds pretty loony. I'd want my sights on in a straight line with the bullet.
