Shoulder stocks for Ruger Old Army?

Several old style cap and ball revolver shoulder stocks to fit Navies, etc,are out there for sale, but I have yet to see one for the Ruger Old Army. Such an accessory would sure be beautiful and make for a fun small game getter. Anyone have one or able to show a link to a photo of one? Thanks, Don.

Shoulder stocks require provisions for mounting on the revolver frame; Ruger Old Army frames don't have such provisions. I've never seen nor heard of anyone making one.

There were dozens and dozens of shoulder stock designs for cap and ball revolvers back in the day. Some designed to fit a single model and others that were generic in style.

It would be possible to cut notches in the bottom of the recoil shield on the ROA, add the cut in the bottom of the grip frame and use a Colt style shoulder stock.

There is a skeleton style shoulder stock for the Remingtons that just screws to the bottom of the grip frame. Another skeleton style that is a clamp on.

I have a article from a 1963 American Rifleman that has about five dozen different shoulder stocks. I'll have to scan it and post it, some interesting stuff.

Wow! What an artifact. I suspect you have an incredible library that I would love to just peruse.

One thing to consider about a stock on any revolver is the barrel to cylinder gas flash. Something like that only inches from your face would be unpleasant. The external cap explosion and the gigantic flash from an ROA might make a stock unusable. I used my wife's kitchen towel as a rest once and only once. It caught fire and burned a nice hole it. I posted a picture of it here. I don't think I could tolerate having any of that anywhere near my face. It could ruin my manly beauty.

Just a "what if?" What if you had a cap and ball revolver that had a shoulder stock, like an 1860 Colt army reproduction. You also had a conversion cylinder for it, but not installed with the stock on it. Would ATF consider that "constructive possession" of a SBR?

That's an interesting question...I bet it would. I bet you could get yourself arrested with a ROA on a shoulder stock with a Kirst conversion.

Crossman American Classic molded plastic stocks would be a good starting point.
$25 is not much for an experiment.

I just did it because I could. I noticed that it looked like it would fit the ROA so I disassembled both guns and set up the Ruger. There was a space at the top that had to be dealt with (I believe I fabbed up a clothes pin to fill the gap). It shot O.K. If one were to go forward with it one would have to cut on the stock and make modifications. I gave up on it because I did not like the concept of a pistol stock on a revolver - strange hand positioning and lotsa crap flying around to hit your fore hand. I liked the way both pistols shot in their original configuration. In summary, If I were going to stock a revolver, that is the way I would go. The whole concept did not work for me. I went in another direction.
