Over on Space Battles this situation was proposed. In case you're wondering, Minas Tirith is the city besieged by Orcs in the Lord of the Rings.

Lt. Dan said:
A ROB warns each and every one of us that in 24hrs, we are going to be transported to Minas Tirith. We have 24hrs to prepare and then when we arrive we have 36 hrs to prepare for the attack, but because we have arrived all the citizens of Minas Tirith has disappeared. Also, the trebuchets have been replaced by Flakpanzers, FLak 88's, and 155mm howiters. How do we fare until the reinforcements arrive in, lets say, 10 days, or if thats too much, 5 days

Space battles has about 6000 registered members. We have about 16,000 presumably armed. How do you think things would go if it was the highroad to go? I think that we'd probably have to delete the artillery, to keep it fair. :D

We have the forum to coordinate and 24 hours to collect what we can. What would you bring? If the SB'ers come along, can we arm all of them, and would we want to?

16K High Roaders, many of whom will be packing EBRs with lots of spare ammo will make mincemeat of a bunch of smelly Orcs.

When do we leave?

This scenario would be too easy for THR.

I doubt my two shot guns and .22LR pistol would be of much use, so I would have to borrow a long rifle.

I wonder how hard it would be to use a game engine like the one used in rouge spear, or even the old quake engine and make a mod where a bunch of people could log on and fight off a siege like that.

Flakpazers? You mean Wirblewinds? COOL! Wirbelwinds on the high mounts would eliminate anything flying. Eat 20mm death, Nazgul!
The 88s would eliminate the oliphants and mahouts, easily. The 155s would hopefully have a nice loadout of Beehive, and the massed orcs would kinda be a little vulnerable.
Also, the seige engines have to close too well withing the 88 range....gee, darn....
Yawn..Sauron, doncha got anything better?

A platoon of M-60A1 Tanks with a full 4000 rd load of 7.62mm for the coax and 60 HEP rounds each would wipe the orc army out easily. When they ran out of ammo they could just cruise around squishing the poor sods.

Why M60's and not M1A2's. The ammo load of the M1A2's doesn't include any main gun anti-personnel rounds (no HE), is limited to 40 or so main gun rounds and the coax load is around 2500 or so. Not as good at killing orcs in other words as the M-60's I served in. :neener:

Hmmmm...if we are talking about taking attack helicopters and battle tanks, we might as well bring along some of those nuclear artillery shell the .gov developed in the 1950s. And the guns to fire them of course. I doubt even Barad-dur would stand up well to a sustained pounding with kiloton yield warheads.

Of course, if we can take those, we may as well take the Monster Bomb the Soviets were working on decades back. The 100 Megaton fusion beastie. All together now...

"..Here comes the sun..." :neener:

Personally, I'd take along a couple 100,000 rounds of .308 winchester FMJ to feed my FAL, lots and lots of pump shotties for the SB folks who are not gun-loons, and all the MRE/dehydrated camping meals I could lay my hands on.

A solid rifle, enough ammo to last me for a couple weeks, a comfortable chair, some beer, a good rest for the rifle, and some good ear plugs to help ignore the fell beasts and I'd be set.

Bring my finnish mosin and all the ammo I can carry, a radio to call my old man who would much rather be manning the gun on his old destroyer out in the Bay of Belfas (naval gunfire is the bomb-literally) and all the tobasco sauce I can carry. Why the tabasco? I don't think there will be anybody who can cook worth a stink and even if there was, there only so much you can do to improve orc meat...

on order when do you want em'?

three B-52 w/ 105,000lbs, conventional each, 3 B-1 w/ undisclosed payloads if that doesn't work, 4 Kc-10 extenders 3 c-130's full of maint types to keep the birds airborne.

company of M-60's (reasons listed above already)

My carbine, 10k rds in a goat cart or jeep (real m-38) my saber and string of cowponies (if I'm in middle earth after the action I will go to Rivendell and the Shire (to help deal w/ Saurman) period)

radio to call the in the arc light strike at first good opportunity.

5lbs of gun cleaning gear breakfree/hoppes and lots of swabs, full set of boresnakes. armours kit for M1 carbine and spares.

oh, crate of sks's with ton of ammo (in stripper clips) for any SB types that ignored the draft notice. I would guess that Shotguns might be somewhat useless against armoured orcs.

when do we depart?

Can I invite guests? they will provide their own guns/ammo.

I'm with anapex. Just a solid rifle with plenty of ammo and a good position. But I'd also bring a carton or two of marlboro lights for when I take a break to clean my rifle. I'd probably leave the ear plugs out though. I'd like to hear them yell out. If it gets to be to much I'd crank up my walkman. Hummmm...now which cds to bring....that would be a tougher choice. :D

airborne cmd ops

EK,

we have 36 hours,
logisticaly I think w/ the extenders we can keep the buffs airborne and hold the bones in reserve they take 'less' maint work and are a bit easier to hide too.

I've worked with wingwalkers on both I think it's doable.

A arc light strike of similar magnitude erased the last major Taliban position in Afganistan, it ought to make mincemeat of the orcs et al.

problem I see is those flying lizzards but a flakpanzer is a good a solution as I could come up with.

Apaches attack helicoptors or P-51s would be another option on those things.

edited, remove northen alliance and correct to Taliban position. brain fade sorry,

I will assume we have to make do with the weapons we have already. No borrowing from the army. We need a good core of AR-type armed riflemen, to provide a good base of decently ranged, rapid fire. More rounds per pound compared to EBRs too. Then support squads of riflemen with MBRs. They can provide extended reach while keeping up a good ROF. Then we get the really good shooters in squads, put some glass on bolt actions and they can provide long range fire. And pick off officers, such as they are, in the Orcish army. Then a few SMG squads. Between all our members we can field some SMGs, I'm sure. We'll use them as reserves, perhaps? Use them to plug up holes. Then we need our MGers. Not sure how many we can muster, but we must have a few. Attach them to key AR squads.

Tamara could probably field a quarter of the equipment. WA will sell us the rest. We'll have to lock him up with the Palantir in the White Tower though. He's a trouble maker. If we can fit him in the tower, of course. :D

Hey Woerm, if them are Air Farce planes you'll need a whole lot more than 3 c-130's full o' maintenance types to just keep 'em in the air, let alone do the mission...

Aye, ride the Air Force all you want. But try getting to, say, Iraq without Chair Force planes. You'll be stuck with the bloody Navy then!

Nice, it's all good babeee...

As for the fell flying critters, anybody wanna help me "transplant" a CIWS to an oxcart? We could put a hobbit in an oversized hamster cage and attatch that to a generator.

Oh, wait. Even better we could drag the cart up on to the plain and level the barrel. Can anybody say weed-whacker?? I think maybe 2 or 3 drums of that 20mm should suffice. One question though, is that 20mm solid or HE. I think a mixture would be more appropriate. Figure 1 HE to 5 AP, I wonder how many orcs one of those shells would go through? And of course the HE will just make nicely shredded orc-burger...

I'd just have to buy some more cases of rifle ammo. Then start thinking of how I'd carry it all, wouldn't want to leave any guns behind. :)

I think it would be more of a challange if we could only bring the weapons we have as a collective body. With a boat load of ammo and 16000 armed to the teeth High Roaders could we hold out?

, I'd take along a couple 100,000 rounds of .308 winchester FMJ to feed my FAL,

Good grief; don't forget several spare barrels and tools to install!

I'd bring the FAL Files guys as light infantry, the guys from M14-Forum as scout/snipers, and the ARFCOM guys as behind-the-lines hellraisers....

Uhh, I forget, are we fighting Orcs or the folks from DU?

Just the stuff I have? Wait a minute....need a big bag.....
Since this thing started with WWII equipment in mind, lets mount the 88s in King Tigers, and Elephants. Add a couple of SturmTigers with the 380mm rocket mortar, and a few Karl Mosler 600mm self propelled mortars.....and the guys inside Minas Tirith can take a heck long smoke and beer break.....

Hmm... I don't know about taking planes with us. Remember, you'd be going to a place that doesn't even have the concept of a plane. They aren't going to have runways.

And if the SB'ers come along too, we're going to have to provide weapons for at least some of them. Quite a few are minors and or living in... unenlightened areas.

I made the point that in a battle against something like the orcs, there is no such thing as a non-combatant. It doesn't matter whether you're 14 or 80, the Orcs will kill everybody if they can break through.

Though, yeah, 16k highroaders, more or less each with enough ammunition to kill a substantial portion of the orcish army is going to have an effect.

I'm in.

Greymoor,
With a boat load of ammo and 16000 armed to the teeth High Roaders could we hold out?
I think you misspelled, "How long do you think it would be 'til we ran out of targets?"

and english kanigit,
I don't think there will be anybody who can cook worth a stink...
Oooh, man, I gotta disagree with that assessment of this crowd. If anything can be done to make something tasty outta Orc meat, some High Roader will find it and serve it up, probably accompanied by a nice cold beverage.. :D

Hey Happy Bob, I think you are right and just to help in this cooking quest I'll see if I can bring the family cooker. We finally finished it about 3 years ago. It's built completely from scratch and when we finished it we ended up needing air overload springs for our dodge half ton that we use to pull it.

Pictures coming when I get home from work. If anybody here is a photoshop god they can add some armour plating and a Ma Duece, just for some flavor... :D
