I own a basic Sig 226 and love it. It was my first gun (now own over 30), and still one of my favorites. Nice trigger, very very soft shooting. Great gun.

So, I was thinking, maybe I should buy one of the high end 226's. Are they actually worth it over the basic one I have? I'm not really a good enough shooter to take much advantage of the short reset trigger..

The P226 X-Five would be a major step up in performance, so would the P210. If the only choices are between the Equinox and an Elite, get an Enhanced Elite. It at least has more than cosmetic enhancements, but I doubt either is worth the cost differential.

Resale on used Sigs flat out stinks, wouldn't buy a new one, ever. My plain jane 226, was a great shooter;)

My P226s will out last me. I trust these pistols above everything else in my collection. I currently own 6 SIG pistols and a 556 rifle. I own several other brands of pistols and half a dozen 1911s (so far). The P226 is the only pistol I own in 3 calibers, 9mm, 40S&W / .357SIG.

I carried a standard non-rail P229 .40 for years as my duty weapon, and eventually got the bug to stick a light on the front, so I took the opportunity to upgrade to a full-size P226. When I went to the gun store to look around, I picked up a P226 Elite .40 for $100 more than the regular P226R.

The SRT (Short Reset Trigger) is absolutely a blast to use. The reset is as short as advertised, the overall trigger is very smooth, and the it melded well with my usual training routine. There was nearly no transition period getting used to it. The extended beavertail on the Elite is nice to have, and I admit that at first I thought it just looked good, but upon first draw I quickly recognized it helped get a fast grip on the weapon. Many people told me when i first got it that I'd want different sights, but I actually like the adjustable shrouded rear night sight. That part may or may not appeal to everyone.

The upgrade was worth it for me because I wasn't just gaining the SRT and extended beavertail. I also gained a bigger platform and a rail for my Streamlight TLR-1. If you have the money to spend and you really want a higher-end Sig, the Elites are really nice and I think they're worth the extra money over a standard Sig. If you don't want to buy a new weapon, you can send your gun back to Sig for the SRT installation if that's really all you want.

Finally, if you pick up an Elite, make sure to get an extended magazine for it ASAP. It's nice having 15+1 rounds of .40 at my disposal.

If you like the beavertail, wood grips and the SRT then go for it. It seems like the only real "shooting" advantage to these guns is the SRT. The grips and beavertail are more about the look of the gun than the function.

Personally I like the look of wood grips on Sigs but they make the heal of the grip too thick for me. That part of the grip is already thick compared to say a 1911 and the wood grips, Sig, Nills, Rocco etc, all make it excessively thick for me. I know a lot of people love them.

I am not a fan of the beavertail on Sigs. That is 100% subjective personal preference.

I'll have to hold one and see what I think of the beavertail..

following in Snorman's footsteps are we Berman?

Lol. Naw, this is deciding I really like the basic model of a gun, and that it might be nice to have a high end version... and send it to Gray Guns for a full action job..

Oh side note, I actually got the P226 Elite Dark. The Dark model is really interesting, because it has aluminum grips thats are very easy to hold on to. However, I think SIG switched back to plastic/rubber grips recently on the Dark models?

If you can find one with aluminum grips, check it out. It's pretty neat.

I have a P226 Blackwater and love the gun. The SRT is superb, and the capacity of 20 +1 is great. Gun shoots dead on and has performed flawlessly.

Had a Sig 229 elite and it was a beautiful gun. However it was also way to heavy, and the SRT did not impress me all that much.
