Sig 226 vs Beretta 92/96

Same price, same condition, same caliber (either 9 or 40). Which one will be pick.

Depends on what I want it for. The P226 is a bit smaller overall, much friendlier to small hands. It also conceals a little better.

The Beretta is larger, as noted, and was designed more as a Duty type pistol, to be worn in a holster with belt style set-up.

It's hard to wrong with Sig. Especially a vintage "West" German-made model.

See, I have small hands, but I like the feel of the Beretta grip wit hogue panels much better than the Sig 226

I would go with the Sig. I can not wrap my hands around the Beretta comfortably. Both are proven designs, but I shoot Sigs better than Berettas.

Theres a reason why I like SIGs, they fit my hand and are accurate and reliable.

The SIG 226 is extremely large. Houge aluminum grip panels thin it out for my small hands to make it manageable. My beretta 92 is extremely large also. However, when I installed Trausch grips, the pistol became smaller and much easier to use than my 226. Therefore I would lean towards the 92FS.

I like the controls of the SIG better. If there is a round chambered it will fire when the trigger is pressed. It is possible (a remote possibility perhaps) to mismanage the Beretta's safety or bump it into the wrong position inadvertently.

A lot of this is personal preference and background. I mostly shoot revolvers and like the simple logic of press implies bang.

The beretta is very nice. Smooth, reliable, accurate.

but I'd choose my german SIG P226 every day of the week.

Not the same beast, gripwise, as the 92F/FS.

Fan of Beretta 92FS, but not the Vertec. So, Sig P226 I would pick.

There is only 1 Beretta with a Vertec grip and a carbon steel frame. The Beretta Steel model... The frame is nickel plated, but many think its stainless steel... The frame IS carbon steel.

Otherwise, if it isn't that model, it is an aluminum frame with the Vertec grip.

Try before you buy

If you can try before you buy, then I would do so.

I would buy the 9m.m. VERTEC as I am looking for one right now.
I really like the grip on the VERTEC. For someone with hands my size, it is a significant improvement over the standard model 92 grip.

I already have a SIG 226 and carried it on duty for a year back in the 90'S.

Both are reliable, accurate and very well made.

Therefore I recommend you try both and decide which is best for you.

Otherwise, buy both. They are both great guns.

I've carried both the Beretta (92/96) and the Sig (226) in both calibers as duty guns.

I like the Sig in 9mm and the Beretta in .40.

The Sig blends with my training better...decocker location and using the overhand slide release.

The Beretta operates more smoothly...non-tilting barrel, straight feed from the mag into the chamber and the largest ejection port on the market...but requires that the slide be release via slide stop.

The Beretta 96 is the most accurate .40 I've ever shot...having tried, at that time, the Glock 22, Sig 226 & 229, S&W 4006, H&K USP

I like both the P226 and the 92FS / M9, however I really do not like the placement of the Beretta's safety / decocker. If I had to choose one it would be the SIG, I rarely shoot the Beretta these days, both work tirelessly but the SIG is just a better all around pistol IME. For years the SIG was my HD weapon, but I decided I wanted to add a weapon light, but no rail on the SIG. Actually only have one pistol with a rail, a G34 Glock. It is set up for USPSA competitions and it does not have Tritium night sights. The SIG out shoots the Beretta but the G34 shoots circles around both, all run flawlessly. I have retired the SIG from nightstand service, G17 with Trijicon night sights and a Surefire X400 weapon light/laser has taken over that task. If I could only own one pistol it would be none of the above, it would be my Custom Shop STI 1911 9mm, bet a SIG X5 might just shoot just as good as the STI, but I can't see how any pistol could.

I like the Beretta Vertec frame and my DA/SA pistol experience is with S&W and Ruger's so I'm more familiar with the controls of the Beretta. The Beretta would be my choice.

I have medium hands and the 226 feels gigantic to me.
So I bought a 225 instead, single stack.

Face it, both guns are for folks with big hands. Both are great guns.
