Ok here the low down...I currently have a Sig 228 that I no longer carry or shoot...it basically just lays in the cabinet...I have a friend who really wants this gun...he has offered to trade me a SA 1911 Champion...I believe it to be the loaded version...it has extend mag release and safety...exented beaver tail grip..Houge finger groove grips and night sights...it also has a recoil buffet and a stainless steel guide rod...I have shot it and it seems to function fine with FMJ ammo...overall the 1911 is in about 95% condition...the 228 has night sights and is also in about 90-95% shape...he has offered to trade the 1911 and give me $300.00 to boot...this seems like a deal to me...I do not have a lot of experience with 1911's or Springfields...I did have a SA GI about a year ago and really liked it but end up trading it off...and I do plan on getting another 1911...so is this a good trade or should I stay away from it...He bought the SA in the late 90's and has never shot it much...he perfers 9mm to 45's...I seriously doubt that this will be a carry piece since I most of the time either carry my BHP or a S&W 66...but in the future who knows after all I do like Single actions autos.

Greeting's All-

Well Karate my friend, normally I'm a SIG kind'a guy; as a .45 caliber
P220A has served me well for years. I also own a 1990 model West German
SIG P228, that is in 'bout 98 percent NRA condition. Nowdays, I don't shoot
much 9m/m as I am rediscovering my love for .45 caliber 1911's. Your deal
sounds good enough too me, but ask yourself if you could ever replace the
SIG. In my case, I think the correct answer would be NO; as the West
German P228's are getting really scarce, and the fact that the P228 is one
firearm that SIG isn't (or hasn't to my knowledge) offered in the form of a
factory refurb. So, I would say NO; don't make the trade, cuz you may
live to regret it~!:D

Ala Dan
I have had some of the same thoughts I too am a Sig lover...but I do want a 1911 so I will have keep reading and soul searching

Money wise it's a steal. Sig 228's have been going for 450-550 on these boards. I believe CDNN still has them for less than 400. Sooo, you could do the swap and sell the champ for 400 and be getting $700 for the sig. You could also do the swap and then buy a 228 from CDNN and have the champion and a sig for $100.

Question for Ala Dan as I am kind of sig-norant. What's the deal with the W. German designation? I read all the time on boards. I have heard that the sig 229 slides are made in America but the 228 slides (and other folded slides) are still W german. So are the frames made in USA and the slides W German?

Is there a known quality difference or is it just kind of a coolness thing about having a pure german sig?

As an aside I had an early austrian import G30. Got rid of it, don't care.

The champion's barrel is about 4 inches. It is supposed to be a commander sized pistol, not an officer's size. While being less than 4.25 inches I don't think that they are subject to the issues that 3 inch barrel 1911's are.

Glad you asked about the West German SIG-SAUER P228's~!:) To my
knowledge, all SIG-SAUER P228's are still made and assembled in Germany.
In my case, mine was made and assembled in West Germany before the
wall caming tumbling down. Also worthy of note, my particular P228 was
imported thru Herndon, VA instead of Exeter, New Hampshire. Not that
it makes a whole lot difference; other than my P228 has a very low S/N,
and quite possibily could have been one of the first imported into the
good ole' U.S. of A.

BTW, the SIG-SAUER P228 was not introduced until 1989, and mine is
a very early 1990 model shipped in the old gray/silver/red/and white
box. It came with one extra standard capacity magazine, and all the
document's.

That is the kind of information that I am looking for...and that is sorta of what I had in mind...getting 700 for the Sig would be good and then I could replace it with a deal on this board or maybe CDNN
