My arms dealer just told me that Sig has released the 228 for civilian use(I didn't realize it was LE only). I already have a 239 and the specs look very similar. What differences are obvious between the two. He didn't have one to handle so I could compare. Is the 228 a double stack?
Thx.

The P228 is a double-stack built on a wider, longer frame -- basically a shortened P226. While the P239 isn't exactly "subcompact" by comparison with a Kahr MK9 or MK40, it is a lot slimmer than the P228. It also has a very different feel to the grip, especially the front strap (which is flat).

228's arent in production anymore, they've been replaced by the 229 from what I understand.

AFAIK, 228's are still in production. They are sometimes hard to find on the civilian mkt because SIG has a hard time keeping up with Military & LE contract commitments.

9mm 229's are fairly rare in my experience.

The 228's stamped slide is a bit lighter than the 229's milled stainless, and it makes for a better balanced gun IMO. If you prefer the thinner grip of the 239, you might look at the 225 - it's basicaly a single stack version of the 228 (actually a precursor to the 228). Many consider it to be the best handling of the 'compact' SIGs. All are quite accurate & reliable out of the box. HTH.

Thanks to all for the replies.
Yes, I prefer single stack but I didn't see the 225 model on the Sig website.
Is it still in production? Since I have the 239 in 9mm I'm steering towards a 220.

I might not be adding much , but the 225 is my second favorite out of my 3 Sigs . Mine's been 100% reliable and hits better than I shoot . I'm probably the oddball of the Sig world but my .357 2340 is my favorite as I do shoot it that much better than the 225 or 220 !
