So today I got to fondle a Sig P232 and I really liked it, fit my hands very well and though it was double action I didn't find the trigger that bad.

Two issues I had with it though-
A) I don't care for .380. As a purely back up pistol it would be fine but as a primary pistol I would like a little more bang.
B) I didn't like the magazine catch. I would rather have the release at the thumb then the bottom of the magazine.

I have seen the P239 but never actually fondled one. The specs are pretty darn close so how does it line up with the 232 in terms of hand feel?

Also any other compact pistols jump out in your mind that would be similar? Preferably something in at least 9mm, preferably 40 S&W.

*EDIT* Just to add, autoloders only please. Never cared for revolvers.

Framewise, the Sig P232 is ergonomically quite similar to the Walther PPK/s. I much prefer the P232 over the Walther mind you. I also do not like the mag release, nor the decocking lever. Beyond that, I find the P232 to be a sweet little pistol.

I personally find the P239 to be a superior weapon. Superior in the general sense that is, not over the P232 specifically. I've shot the P239 extensively in 9mm, and have absolutely nothing bad to say about it. That's just me of course, and others will naturally vary in their assessment.

My 239 in 9mm is my daily carry. Compared to a 232 (my friend has one), the grip is a bit larger (from what I can remember) and it has a thumb release for the magazines. I slapped a pair of Hogue grips on my 239 and love it. 9mm isn't a recoil-crazy round to begin with, but it's like butter with those Hogues.

A decent bit larger than the 232, though.

By similar it take it you mean high quality, single stack, metal frame, DA/SA or DAO pistols. In that case you should look at several S&Ws -
4053 - 8 rds of 40 S&W. 3.5" bbl http://www.kyimports.com/sw.htm - just scroll down a bit
4014 - Much like the 4053 http://www.summitgunbroker.com/1560709.html
3913 - Basically a 9mm version of the 4014
908 - Economy version of the 3913
457 - 45 ACP version of the 908
CS9 - Even more compact version of the 3913
CS45 - Like the CS9, but in 45 ACP

I own both a P230 (essentially the same as P232) and a P239. Mostly I carry the P230 because of the lighter weight and slightly smaller dimensions. My P239 is used in IDPA matches with an IWB holster, so actually I could carry this gun if I wanted to. I really don't feel undergunned with a .380 because I am quite proficient with it, and the bg threat level is not real high in my area. You said that the P232 fit your hand well, which to me says you have smaller hands, as I do. The P239 is apt to fit you well too, as long as you use the standard factory grips. Most aftermarket grips for the P239 will be larger.
