Sig Mauser M2 .40...any experiences?

I just picked up what seems to be a fairly decent deal. It's a Sig Mauser M2 in .40. The gun has been used, but not a whole lot. It's chunky and has slightly strange take-down procedures, as well as a weird manual safety on the rear of the weapon, just below the bottom of the slide. The trigger pull isn't the best DAO I've encountered, but smooth...not bad. I have yet to fire the weapon, and am looking forward to it. I imagine it'll handle the .40 as well as the P229 or Sigpro series. We'll see. Anyway, I got it with two 10 rd mags (which I believe are the only mags this gun has ever been available with) in the box for $275. It probably won't be my favorite gun, much less my favorite Sig, but it seems rather decent. I understand it was also available in .45 and .357 sig.

Does anyone else have any experiences with this gun (good, bad, indifferent)? I welcome and appreciate any comments, suggestions, information, etc.

My brother has one in .45.

I enjoyed shooting it. Its got a DAO trigger that is a little heavy, but not too bad. Its a pretty accurate pistol, and he hasn't had any problems with reliability that I know of.

The wide grip and heavy construction allows it to soak up a lot of recoil, so follow up shots are nice and fast.

I don't like the safety (on the back of the slide, you sweep it with your thumb) but its a DAO so you really don't NEED the safety.


One cool thing about the .40 is that I understand that they are good candidates for 10mm conversion (have the chamber cut, put heavier springs in it and either the .40 mags will hold 10mm, or like the Para Ordnance P16 mags they are simply the .45 mags with a plastic spacer, or you just get .45 mags and reshape the feed lips).

Had one in .45ACP. It shot well enough, the wide grip did help in spreading out the recoil. Mine was so-so in groups. Had a number of negatives that I didn't like about it that put it on the trading block. (In my history, I've only sold off/traded 3 guns, the M2 being one of them.)

Disassembly/reassembly is more complex than a regular semi. The safety was an afterthought. The DA trigger on mine was a bit on the heavy side and stacked at the end of its longish travel. Suppose to be a compact but is too wide to be one. IMO not a very well thought out design.

When you take the slide stop out, be sure to lift up on the lever before pulling it out. Otherwise, it hangs up on the notch for it on the frame.

Not talking trash about your mauser pistol, but Massad Ayoob wouldnt review it in the official sig book.

To clarify, I'm not saying the M2 is a bad gun, just one that did not meet my expectation. It shot well enough and never had a misfeed or misfire. They wide grip did provide a very comfortable grip and low felt recoil. The gun itself was just not to my liking.

Not trashing YOU at all, but I could give a rat's posterior region what Massad Ayoob thinks. He's another guy with an opinion to me, not the firearms "god" that some people make him out to be. If he didn't write so damned much, would anybody even know who he was, what he has ever done, or whether it's even true (and not even sure about the last two...)? I've got a ton more respect for guys I know who quietly go about their business and KNOW their business. Not some guy who was law enforcement and somehow got into gun rag writing.

I've only known one fellow with one of these. Carries it as a work weapon for a private company. He said he and his company had a decent experience with them once the barrels in their guns had been replaced by the manufacturer because of an apparent manufacturing issue which had caused functioning problems. It seemed to be working last time I watched him shoot it.

Don't have any opinion one way or the other ...
