I have a new Sig P210 Legend with six magazines that I picked up about four weeks ago.

The problem:
After the last round is fired the slide would sometimes lock back and some times it would NOT.
This problem started the very first day I picked the gun up. The odd part was some of the magazines were locking back the slide more ofen that others.

So today I called and talked to the guys at Sig… They offered to have Fed Ex pick up the P210 and ship it back at N/C for service. I'm a bubblegum & baling wire type guy so when cleaning it today I put a magazines with the slide was off, and after playing around I could see what the problem was. I then took apart all the magazines and measured the springs… some were 6.8” and some were 7” and another was 7.5”.

The Fix:
I took all the springs and stretched them out to 9”… No more problems.
Very odd they would opt for such a cheap spring in such a great shooting gun.

I have only been shooting for about a year, so I'm not all that good... but at 75 feet standing free-hand 8 shots 4” group and at 45' if’s the stuff.

Here is a link to my first 45' target.

Hope this helps the next guy.

Could you give us a quick review of the gun? I've always fancied the 210's design, and I like Sig products in general. I'd just like to hear how it stacks up against similar handguns.

The springs will be different length if they haven't all been used uniformly -- springs take a SET when new (and with use), and chances are they'd all be shorter, and uniformly so, over time. (Storing some of them fully loaded would have changed the spring length, for example.)

You don't want to STRETCH springs -- as that shortens the life of coil springs. You may have solved the problem temporarily, but you may have done some damage.

If SIG is willing to pay shipping, you SHOULD send the gun back to SIG (since it was N/C) and let them see what needs to be done.

Not locking back the slide is GENERALLY a magazine spring issue, but it can also be other things -- including the slide lock spring, or non-uniformly loaded ammo.

I'm surprised you'd have this kind of problem with a NEW P-210 Legend.

I would have to say that with six (6) new magazines right out of the box they all should have the same spring length and strength … I have only loaded the magazines with no more that 5 or 6 rounds… Moreover that problem was on the very first magazine put into a new gun that had never been fired except by sig.

From what I see and I could be wrong, on a P210 the slide lock spring has nothing to do with the locking back the slide other that to hold down the latch down until the magazine spring pushes it up to lock the slide back. And that spring is weak and the latch move very easily.

I agree with you Walt that stretching the spring is not the correct fix… but I do not want to send it back at this time… I want to shoot it.

May be Sig will come our with new springs… anyway the offer to service it was before I call them and told them of the fix… their reply was OK and that he would tell the other guys.

One last thing the mag’s did not want to eject, I mean you had to like help them… but now they pop-out like they should.

Quick review:

The P210 Legend is by far the best postal I have ever shot… it fits my hand like a glove.
It shoots like a rifle and feels like I just shoot a 22. - I reload and I'm using 4.2 g of Win 231 under berry 124.

One thing that I did notice was after shooting 100 rounds then taking it a part to clean… it was not dirty inside… it was nothing like any of the pistols I have… it look clean. Also it looked like all the crap that used to be in the gun was at the end of the barrel. At present I have a P226 X5 Allround, P226 TC with the conversion .40, 357 & 22. and a P220 45 Elite S.

For the trigger... OMG it is right their, you don’t have to reach for it with your finger… and it is smooooooth.
The safety is a little hard for be to push down with my thumb but I think with a little practice it will master it.

It breaks-down like a 1911 but you only have to push out the latch and the slide comes off with the barrel inside. Click here of the picture

The finish is the best I have seen on any of my pistols.

The P201 only holds 8 rounds… but with this pistol you can make them all count.

Thanks for the review and insight into the problem you were having with your pistol. I have always wanted a SIG P210 but limited availability and high prices have kept me from getting one. This new P210 Legend model is priced right and more affordable than a majority of the older Swiss made models currently on the market.

I'd check with Wolfe (or SIG) and see if springs are available for those mags. Stretching those springs almost certainly shortened their life -- probably pretty dramatically -- and new ones are in order.

I had a SIG P-210-6, and liked it a lot, but there were some downsides to the gun -- some of which were remedied with the changes made to the Legend. One big problem was the cost of magazines and mag parts -- outrageous. The old-style mag release was a big pain, the safety wasn't really user-friendly, and there were some sharp edges that led to bloodletting until I broke them with a file.

I later had need of a second car (truck, actually), and sold the P-210-6, a S&W Model 52-2, and a colletible Luger, and got a fairly new pickup with only minor additional outlay. I think I miss the 52-2 the most, but it was a bear to find ammo for -- as I don't reload, and it was VERY PICKY about what would and wouldn't work.
