How easy is it to completely strip a Sig? I know how to field strip it using strip down lever, but where do you go from there?

Its a pretty easy thing to do. The first time it took me ohhhhh 2 hours. The second time it took me ten minutes to take down pretty much the entire lower minus the mag release.

Just make sure the the hammer is not cocked when you try and take the "block" out. Its a pretty common mistake that people make when tearing down a Sig. You will also need a screw driver blade with a "slot" in it to put one of the springs back in.

Take lots of digital pictures before you start :)

If you take out the two split roll pins, found in earlier and refurb guns, you should (according to the company) replace and NOT re-use them.

In the later and current versions, with the knurled pin being used to retain the breech block et. al., too much disassembly will reduce the effectiveness of the roll pin to stay in place.

Which SIG?

After normal field disassembly, decock the hammer. Rotate the takedown lever [16] ~180° up (past the top of the frame). Wiggle the lever out until half way (it will be loose and will not come out the rest of the way with the lever in the up position). Pull the lever until it stops, rotate forward ~90°, pull the rest of the way out. Lift out the locking block [17] (front first) which also holds the takedown lever retaining spring [19]. Before removal of the block, note the position of the slot or grooves at the ends of the trigger hinge pin [21]. After removal of block, note the new angle of the pin and look inside to note the position of the two slots on the pin that mate with the block. This position will be important during re-assembly. Pull out the hinge pin and the slide stop [18] will also fall out.

This is as far as I go for disassembly without tools.

Reverse for re-assembly. Note that there is a step on the end of the right side of the takedown lever. When the block (with retaining spring) is put back into place, the spring will extend into the hole of the takedown lever. Position the step of the lever end over the spring, rotate the lever left or right ~90° until the spring is depressed and push the lever back in until you have to rotate again. To move the hinge pin to the angle you want it, it usually is not necessary to use a screwdriver. Just give the pin ends (when in the frame) a pinch and move it. That is why the newer models no longer have a slot but are grooved.

I use the retaining spring or the edge of the barrel feed ramp to push in the floor plate retainer of the (pre-ban) mags to disassemble them.
