In reversing the mag catch on a Sig P226, I accidentally got the mag catch/release detend thingee installed backwards. How do I remove the mag release assembly at this point, and put it back together correctly?

Go over to sigforum.com some of the folks over there are aware of how fix this.
It involves a thin piece of flexible metal strip inserted between the latch and frame to depress the locking piece. Good luck. :)

I got my reversed mag catch out and reinstalled properly. I used a .006" brass feeler gauge, cut into a small strip and inserted between the catch and the frontstrap of the grip frame. It kept the stop depressed and it all came out as it should.....

Pull the grips off, put the pistol catch-side-down, slide the off-side mag catch plate thingee to the rear (catch the spring as it flies out), flip the pistol over, push in the catch stop and slowly lift the release out of its recess. Flip the pistol over and reverse the installation. You'll have to remove the trigger bar's torsion spring on the right side of the frame after the grip is removed; this is obvious once you see things and you'll have no issues taking it off/putting it on.

The missing text in the SIGForum link is that the step/outward protrusion in the stop goes in the frame FIRST, so that the step is facing you (the 'tall' portion of the stop is going in first). if you put the stop in so that the step in the stop thingee is facing towards the pistol and the 'tall' portion goes in last - you're hosed.
