Yesterday I put upwards of 100 rounds flawlessly through a new SIG P290. I had heard about problems with the trigger going dead if one short-strokes the trigger and pulls too soon before reset. The slide then has to be cycled (at least partially) to re-cock the gun otherwise you have a paperweight. My gun was made in late March 2011 and did not exhibit that problem. I felt confident that I had a good chance of a good gun.
Once I came back home and examined the gun after the range I found that once the slide was racked and the trigger was pulled the hammer would only partially fall. At first this problem was intermittent but is now constant. This isn’t the SIG rebounding hammer where the hammer doesn’t appear to fall all the way but it most definitely falls far short of the firing pin, not even close. Oddly enough if I use my left hand to pull the trigger the malfunction is only intermittent. When I take the slide off the hammer/trigger functions as it’s supposed to. Once the slide goes on the hammer only half falls with continual second strike capability (which the gun isn’t supposed to have) dropping the hammer only half way with every so often (rarely) a full strike.
Of course the answer is one that is becoming all too familiar: send it back to SIG. But, before I make the call Monday morning, is there anything that I’m overlooking here or any simple fix.
