I just bought a Sig SP2022 9mm and I bought some Hornady 9mm Hollow points for home defense. The guy at the gun store said that I should run at least 1 magazine of the hollow points through my pistol to see if they work. He said that the Sigs have issues feeding hollow points. Has anyone else out there heard of this happening? Would like to hear some advice.

No, not specifically with Sigs, but it is always a good idea to check out any new firearm you plan to use for self defense with the intended ammo because while it will be most likely to work, finding out it actually doesn't when the neighborhood psycho is four seconds from slaughtering you is going to be really embarassing ... and painful as well.

I recommend more than one box. IMHO 200 to 250 round after say at least 500 of FMJ is a minimum requirement for a self defense gun.

This gun should not be "ammo sensitive," but function checking is still important. When I first got my Glock 19, it ran 100% with FMJ but would fail to feed the last round of a hollowpoint, nosediving it and hanging the edge of the HP cavity on the bottom of the feed ramp. This was due to faulty magazine followers. The pointy-nosed FMJ would function because the rounded tip would slide up the ramp.

Judging from your username, I gather you are from CA. If you got that SP2022 from Turner's, he's referring to a bad batch of guns they had.

I've never had a problem with SigPros feeding JHPs, but I do run about 200 rounds of my intended carry ammo through it before trusting it for defense. Before that I'll run some range ammo through it just for function, but I do that with all my guns.

Never heard of Sigs having issues feeding quality HP ammo. FWIW I have about 800 rounds (mixed range & defensive) through my new 2022 and have had zero malfunctions.

Be sure to field strip and clean off the factory oil (don't forget to do the same with the magazine(s)) before shooting your new gun.

My 2022 eats hollow points just fine. I have several hundred rounds through it. Buy a couple boxes and hit the range, see what happens.

I have 2 Sig Pro's (2022 and 2340). Both eat anything i put through them.

Pick what you want to carry and IMO run at LEAST 50rds of it through your gun before you trust it.

50 is a ridiculous MINIMUM but just 1 mag is pointless IMO.

My fellow officer and buddy just bought a brandy-new Sig P-220 Elite stainless and was having similar problems with hollow points. Sig took care of it by way of polishing the feed ramp "lip" so they wouldn't catch and gave it the thumbs up. I had to do the same thing with my Springfield EMP when I first bought it (did the polish job myself). Not so uncommon afterall??
+1 for adequate break-in time.

A few simple changes/improvements "by you"

Yea, Hornady's JHP shapes are a bit on the thin/sharp side vs say, Federal HST JHP's or Remington Golden Sabers JHP's are more full and rounded in shape and feed smoother than Hornaday's..

Get some Flitz Gun Polish, with your barrel out, using a gun pad, with one finger, pressing firmly, working only in an UP and DOWN direction, as the bullet/s feed, and you'll be surprised at what looks clean and the black that you'll take/pick out and then repeat, let dry, then with clean gun pad, same up and down motion only, polish that feed ramp out and you'll be good to go..

This worked for me on my SA EMP 1911's feed ramp and what I wanted to shoot, either 124gr or 134gr JHP's of which I use the 2 brands mentioned above..

Just continue to polish it, takes but 3 mins, any time you clean your gun and have the barrel out..

You can also, using a Q-tip, clean and polish the barrel chamber area stopping just short of where the rifling begins.. It's what I do, did to my EMP 1911 9mm and all my Sigs feed ramps and barrel chambers, now and then. Doing both, make that about 5 mins of time..

But, I'd just shoot FMJ until I had 300 - 500 rounds thru, then I'd start up with finding which JHP's feed/work and those that don't..

You may find that once you polish your feed ramp and barrel chamber, that the Hornady's may actually work well but I'd have a box of either Federal HST's or Remington Golden Sabers, for their full/rounder shape for less chances of feed issues you may still get with the Hornady's you have left.. Cover both makes/types and make the better decision on JHP's.

But I'd break her in more with just FMJ min 200 rounds, first, then do the JHP testing.. (making sure you can at least clean, wipe clean, the feed ramp first) if at the same range session..

Thank you everyone for the info. I think my course of action will be to take it down, clean it thoroughly, slightly polish the feed ramp with a cleaning cloth and then run a few hundred rounds of FMJ's through it then start testing out boxes of HP until I know it will eat anything.

Sidenote 9mmepiphany I didn't purchase it at Turners but I bought the ammo there so that is where the kid working there told me that the HP might not work in the gun.

They are the only ones that I know of, in CA, who had the SigPros with feeding problems.

The SigPro is the great unsung treasure of the Sig line
