Sig V Crown 9mm 115, 124, and 147gr JHP in Clear Ballistics gel. All of the Sig's 9mm offerings tested. Two rounds in bare gel, two in heave clothing at 10 feet. All shot from a Smith & Wesson M&P compact 2.0 with a 4-inch barrel. I continue to have a problem with the chronograph and I'm going to have to find a remedy to the problem.

Let's start off with the 115gr. The first round didn't register on the chrony but penetrated to 12.75 inches and expanded to .64 inches. Round two had a velocity of 1229fps and penetrated to 13.25 inches and expanded to .64 inches. In heave clothing, the first round penetrated to 20 inches and expanded to .54 inches. Round two exited the side of the first block at 15.75 inches, expanded to .55 inches and was found laying on the floor.

The first round of the 124gr in bare gel hit at 1199, penetrated to 15.25 inches and expanded to .60 inches. Round two had a velocity of 1191fps and also stopped at 15.25 and expanded to .61 inches. The heavy clothing test was a little disappointing. The first shot had a velocity of 1195fps and passed completely through both 16-inch gel blocks and was not recovered. Round two penetrated to 17.75 inches and hit at 1213fps.

Now the 147gr loading. Bare gel shot penetrated to 18.75 inches and expanded to .58 inches. Round two penetrated to 18 inches and expanded to .68 inches. No velocity on either round. Like the 124gr, the 147gr was a bit of a disappointment. The first round had a velocity of 1007fps, penetrated to 19 inches and expanded to .50 inches. Round two hit at 1034fps but passes through 32 inches of gel and was not found.

Normally I would do a short barrel test but because of the chrony problem, I will update later when I have a chance.

Hmm. I suppose the 115gr might do okay from a shorter barrel but it looks like the 124gr and 147gr might already be too slow to expand well through heavy clothing.

How are the measured velocities compare to SIG's published velocities?

Not a big enough difference to make me give up my HST, but definitely worth grabbing a box of that 115 if I happen to see any around.
Just looking at those... the term 'flying ashtray' comes to mind.

Sig list the velocity at 985fps for the 147gr, 1165fps for the 124gr, and 1185 for the 115gr. No mention of barrel length.

So you're actually showing velocities above the published specs and not getting very impressive expansion through clothing. That's pretty disappointing.

I guess I'll be in the minority here...but what exactly is disappointing about these results? It seems to me that the expansion and penetration are more than adequate; what am I missing?

Disappointing when compared other ammo on the market that performs much better. Disappointing because of two complete pass through, which suggest that the bullets did not expand.

Disappointing too for ammo that's close to $20 a box. I'd guess something like WWB 147gr will work as well (actually as poorly) at a lesser price.

The V-Crowns have failed in more than one YouTube channel denim tests:

The Winchester White Box is really not bad:

Through 4 ply denim .471 expansion and average penetration of 14.375"

What's the Winchester stuff going for at Wal Mart? Online it's over $20 for a box of 50. That's more than HST's

Last time I saw any at Wal-Mart it was $19 and change for a box of 50. It has been awhile so I don't remember the exact price.

The cheapest I was able to find HST was 56¢ per round or $27.97 + shipping for a 50-round box.

At my local Walmart, Winchester USA9JHP is routinely $19.99 out the door.

Having said that though - I carry 147gr Winchester Ranger "T" Series. I probably wouldn't carry the WWB JHPs unless I owned a DB9 or something that would only work well with lighter grained bullets.

Vcrowns don't seem to do well in clothing. I saw a test of the 180 gr 10mm Auto Vcrown and aside from chronoing at 100 fps under listed velocities, it also failed to expand reliably in denim. I'll stick with my 200 gr XTPs in 10mm Auto as it seems to be a little more consistent in both the tests I have seen on the Internet and in my own personal testing. I can also vouch that the XTP doesn't seem to clog with hair and hide either.

But yeah, not impressed with the SIG V-crown offerings. Now I know why it always seems to in stock at my local sporting goods store.
