Hi,

I am about to begin my pistol permit process, I am told at some point here in NY I have to be in process of buying a handgun in order to get the permit. sounds odd, but heard it from reliable sources.

Anyways, I have narrowed my slection down to the SIG 2340 and the springfield XD40. Both are suppose to be great weapons for around the $450 mark. From reviews, the Sig might be more accurate but the XD has a lifetime warranty and cheaper by a couple bucks, not enough to make a descision on.

What do you guys suggest?

Oddly enough, the polymer Sigs have not caught on. I have no idea why.

I've shot the XD-40s though, its a great weapon. Pretty good trigger, very natural pointability and feel.

I haven't really looked into the Sig P2340's yet because I dont hear much about them and no where rents one to try out. So.... yeah.... I dont doubt thought that they're GREAT weapons also.

If you can, definitely try both out. Go bug the Sigforum guys to let you try out one of their Sigs. :D

As great as Sigs are the poly guns just arent popular. Like CZ's fleeting attempt with the 100/110.......
Ive shot both and would choose the XD. Its got a thicker muzzle with the rail and will carry a little bulkier if your going IWB for a CCW. But will still work very very well. Very few guns are more accurate than a good XD. Very few.

Shoot well.

I have to cast the dissenting vote here.
I did a comparo a few years ago, and found that the 2340 was the most accurate gun available in 357SIG.
So, I bought one.
Later, I got a 9mm conversion barrel from bar-sto.
As you could guess, it outshoots all my other 9mm guns, even my H&K P7, my beloved SIG 228, etc.
Bought a .40 barrel from SIG, never did a comparo with .40, but I have a smith 610 that I suspect will out-shoot any of the .40 autos out there in my price range.
If the gun's performance in 357SIG is any indication, the 2340 is superior to any I've tried.
I would really like a chance someday to shoot a CZ75b in .40, converted to 357SIG with a Bar-sto barrel. I suspect that would be worth the price of admission.

Personally I have owned both. I love the Sig 2340 trigger, but loathe the lack of aftermarket support. Also the 2340 is not as easy to field strip, not a huge deal but worth considering.

The XD has a significant aftermarket support, but not as nice of a trigger. Nice shooter though.

I would have to say they are probably very very close in accuracy with the benefit of the doubt going to the Sig.

Personally I have been holding out for the Sig 2022 to come out.

Springfield XD40 vs. Sig 2340 Pro

I have no experience with the XD40 but I've owned a Sig Pro in .40 cal. for the past couple of years. Positives for me are: nice trigger, ultra reliable and very accurate (will outshoot my HK USP 40 sometimes). Negatives: bulky for caliber size, even though a choice of grip sizes are provided, the grip seems to be larger than a lot of people are comfortable with (try them yourself) and I'm personally not in love with the " figure eight " style sights ( again, an individual matter ).
At least for the money, I think it would be hard to beat the Sig Pro in the "best buy" category. Too, with my purchase ( 389.00 new) of the Pro in .40 cal., I can shoot .357Sig ammo in it with the purchase of a .357 barrel ( no change in magazines needed )...Like mentioned in an earlier reply, I would opt for the pistol that felt best in my hands.

Actually, I have both and I love them both. I have much more experience carrying the 2340 than the XD, but thats just partly because I have had the 2340 for a lot longer time.

I do think I like the XD a little more though. Both carry about the same in my opinion.

My Sig Pro 2340 in 40S&W is my favorite handgun. I wouldn't trade it for a glock or an XD.

I looked at both very heavily and bought the XD-40 instead. I liked the feel better in my hand, it also was not as top heavy. I read where others speak of the 2340 trigger being better, not in my case, the XD's was much better. Maybe it was just the two guns I tried? I also prefer the XD over the Sig's DA/SA, but to each his own.

If I were buying the 2340, I would buy it in 357Sig instead, it just seems right. For what it's worth, I think the 2340 is a great looking gun. ;)

Let us know what you buy, PICS too! :D

Get the one you shoot the best. The XD is a good gun but for me I just Shoot the Sig Pro Better. Rent both, Shoot both, And then pic the best one for you.

thanks for the feed back

All in all, where ever I look for reviews, the line is devided right down the middle. I don't know if I'll be able to rent a gun around here though. In a couple of months when my permit goes through, I'll let everyone know what I ended up with. I'll show pics and shooting results.

again thanks alot

sig 2340 .40

i currently own a sig 2340 in .40 S&W. I previously read about comparisons made between the 2340 and XD here are my 2 cents. I never have shot the XD, so i can only provide info on the 2340. Unloaded it is very topheavy but it balances out when a full mag is inserted. I have ran probably 2000 rounds through it without any jams or feed malfunctions but i do recommend cleaning the weapon and oiling it before your first fire. It seems with my pistol, it shoots low with 180 grain rounds low at 25 yards. But anything else, this weapon loves. It is highly accurate and very reliable. I wouldnt reccomend it because of its size for concealed carry. As a duty weapon, superior pistols are out there but it would hold its own. The 2340 also has the advantage that you can fire .357 sig in the .40 model and vice versa with just the change of the barrel. The factory mags are already set up to handle both rounds.:)
