I inherited an old Stevens 16-gauge break barrel shotgun from my father. It has just the bead sight on the front. I’m not a shotgun shooter so was thinking of a rifle/pistol insert from MCA adapters, http://www.mcace.com/shotguninserts.htm. I could learn/adjust to this, but want something better. Now I’m working on the sight.

I do not want to drill & tap the receiver. I want to be able to reverse anything to put back to original latter on. Right now, I’m thinking of a picatinny bolt on barrel adapter mounted just in front of the front stock and a red dot scope.

Is this a viable option?
Does anyone have any other suggestions?
Is this going to be a hard one to keep sighted in? I’m leaning towards 7.62x 39 for the insert.

I generally shoot at a range from 50-100 yards and paper targets.

I would assume the manufacturer of the inserts has tested them, but 7.62x39 on a shotgun frame seems like a horrendously bad idea. You are talking double the PROOF pressure of a 16ga. I would stick to a pistol round if you are sure you want to go the insert route. There are plenty of photos on the internet of H&R shotgun frames that let go when someone put a rifle barrel on them. They are the same frame, but rifle frames are hardened differently.

Regardless of that.

You can't hit a barn from the inside with the doors shut with chamber adapters.

Don't waste your money finding that out again.

It's a shotgun.
If you want a rifle, sell it and buy a rifle.

Yes, the pressure is higher. The thrust, however, against the breech and the walls of the chamber is across a considerably smaller area. Even pistol cartridges operate at higher pressures than the 16.
