Sightron SII 4-16x42 MD or Burris FFII 4.5-14

Trying to decide between the two scopes.
Rifle: RRA 20" Varmint
Application: Bench & Pod, Targets
Range: mostly 100 yds, 200-300, some extended range 300+

1) Sightron SII 4-16x42mm AO Target turret Matte Mil-Dot
2) Burris Fullfield II 4.5-14x42mm AO Matte Ballistic Plex
(includes Spotting Scope, which I do not need; already have one)

Any comments which one would fit my application best?
Comments on durability, quality, optics?

go for the Sightron, I have a SII 6-24x42mm AO scope. Its good glass, but honestly hasn't been mounted on anything yet, so I cant tell you about reliability. Though, from what I've read it holds its own very well.

The picture is very clear, and very bright at a good price. Have fun.

Plus it looks better than the Burris scopes also.

I can't comment on the particular model that you want but I can tell you that I think Sightron scopes are an exceptional value and compare very favorably with Leupolds and the like. I personally have two Sightrons, an SII 3-9x42 and an SI 3-9x32 RF. Both scopes are mounted on rimfire rifles so durability has not been an issue but the clarity and light transmission are excellent on both, they track dead on, and they both have held zero.

I have the SII416X42MD on my DPMS Panther LR .308 and it is great. I used the 'dots' to estimate the distance of an apartment building that I could see from my dining room, and it was right on within a few yards. Roughly, I calculated 320 yards with the scope (measuring distance sutained by two bricks, IIRC.) and I confirmed that distance by stepping it off and also as measured from a map. They all yielded the same result, but I imagine I could be off a few yards - maybe.

All other characteristics are great; turrets, adjustments up and down, eye relief, etc. In my case, I really like the fine cross-hairs which do not cover up small targets as some of my other scopes do.

BTW, I bought mine from www.bearbasin.com for $379 including shipping, which at the time was the lowest price I found. Of course, a week later, MidwayUSA had them on special sale for about $40 less. Oh well...

My next scope puchase will be the Super Sniper from www.swfa.com, which has been getting great reviews. Yes, it used to be the Tasco, but it has quite a history. Anyway, it is fixed power (several options) and costs around $300.

The first scope I considered was the Super Sniper 10X, but decided I really wanted a variable. I did a lot of research on the SS 10X.
If I was going fixed, it would be Super Sniper.

I saw that Midway had the Sightron on sale back in April for $339.
Didn't have the varmint upper back then, so wasn't scope shopping.
I've found the Sightron for $350-$358 as compared to the Burris at $337 (with the spotter deal).

I don't have a Sightron, but am seriously considering getting one. On the other hand, I've had two Burris's. One is, barely, acceptable for its purpose on a gun I don't use a lot. The other, a 3-9 compact A/O, I literally gave away.

I replaced the compact with a Simmons 4-14 A/O Whitetail & got twice as good for half the price. Not that I'm trying to make the Simmons sound as though it's the greatest thing on the face of the earth, it's not. But it is MUCH better than the Burris it replaced.

For those who wish to vent, I have a wide variety of scopes. They range from a Denver Redfield Bear Cub to Leupold Vary-X III's. I've been at this shooting thing for a while, maybe even a while & a half, using many brands & types of glass over the years.

I don't claim to know it all by any means. But I do know that the last dollar spent on a Burris, by me, is in the past. Particularly after the scope was returned by them saying all was within spec, nothing wrong. Thanks a lot, thanks for nothing Burris.

That's the first bad thing I've heard on Burris.
I have a Simmons on my 10/22T. Maybe a bit of overkill there, but works.

Looks like the Sightron is going to win!

I have both. A Burris 3X9 on my 6.5X55 and a Sightron 4X16 on my Morrison Precision Savage 10FP. I like both but the Sightron is the far better long range scope.

NEtracker, I have a SII416x42MD mounted on a 700P Rem., like the one in the link earlier. I got that scope on the recomendation of Gewehr98, and don't regret it for a minute. I wouldn't hesitate to get another Sightron, if I needed another scope.
