Sights on my AR

Had a bit of a stupid moment with my AR.

They have the peephole (currently set) and there seems to be another one, with a much larger hole. I have been told that the large hole is better for aiming in close ranges.

Two questions, how close is 'close ranges' and two, how do I switch them?

The large aperature is marked 0-2, and is intended to be used to engage targets less than 300m away, or when visibility is limited (like at night).

You can swap between the two be simply flipping the sight forwards or backwards.

When you switch from the large peep to the small peep your point of impact is raised by roughly 6 MOA IIRC.

I figured as much, mine must simply be put on tight, because before I asked, I tried that. I will push harder, so long as I don't have to worry about breaking things.

For the record, stupid moment = I need knowledge. It could also be written as 'Someone who knows more than me, toss your 2 cents in'. I figured I would give everyone a bit of a chuckle and an ego boost. Funny thing, I got more help from a person living in LA than a fellow Southerner...

Guys, settle down. He asked a very reasonable question.

When you got your first AR, you were in one of three situations:

1. You had a helpful friend there to instruct you in its use.

2. You had a helpful drill instructor there to instruct you in its use, maggot.

3. You had to figure it out for yourself.

If THR is not a place to ask such questions, we might as well log off and play Solitaire or something.

I just purchased my first AR this summer. The guy at the gunshop showed me how to break it down and gave me a "quick" how to.

I picked up more knowledge once I started talking with folks at the range.

The guys from AR15.com have local shoots and get togethers. They have been a valuable resource and I've met some new friends.

Good job in asking, never be afraid to borrow brains I say. And don't be turned off by the gruff codgers. Sometimes they are a wealth of info and knowledge.

Here's some advice from someone who has just a little more expeirence than you.

1. If you buy a firearm from a gundealer ask qustions about the operation of it. He should have already gone through that with you.

2. You should have gotten a owners manual. On page 21 of my Colt AR owners manual it has instructions and some nice pictures that would have answered your questions. Do you have an owners manual? If not, get one.

3. Seek instruction locally. A basic carbine class. Go to the local rifle range and get to know the people. These people are very helpfull.

4. Don't depend on getting all your knowledge from gun fourms. You can miss-interpret the way they answered because it's just written words, you don't get to see the facial expressions, hear the tone of voice or have them hugging you while they answered.


If I hurt your feelings, I didn't mean to. It was a simple question. You gave me the impression that you didn't know the basics.

Thats not correct with a2 sights. That is correct the original a1 sights. When they had two small peeps one for shorter ranges and one for longer. Thats not the case now. One peep is a larger ghostring style and the other is a small peep.

This is not correct, M16A2 type sights do not come standard with same plane apertures. XS sight produces a same plane aperture, the 0-2 peep and small peep are centered at the the same height above the bore. ARMS also produces sights with a same plane aperture.

M16A2 rear apertures come in three varieties, same plane, .013" difference(Bushmaster and DPMS), and .017" difference (milspec). Listed below are the shifts in impact when shifting between apertures, note that this is an increase in elevation when shifting from the large peep to the small peep, at 100 meters.

0.017" ________3.06"_________3.83"

It no suprise that a properly BZO'd M16A2, using M855, will be zeroed at 300m and when using the small aperture rounds will impact approximately 6" high at 200m, when switching to the 0-2 apeture, the rifle will be zeroed at 200m.

Looks like I was wrong a bit embarressing for an Ar15 armorer. Thanks for the info.
