What is the diameter of the hole in the "distance" peep sight (the smaller one) on a Bushmaster AR?

I shot one yesterday (16" with the full-length handguard) side by side with my unscoped mini-14 Ranch, and noticed how much easier it was to see the target with the AR sight than through the miniscule peephole on the mini. I'm now debating drilling the mini's peephole a little larger.

Does anyone make replacement peeps for the Ranch Rifle rear sight, or replacement sights more similar to the AR's?

I have an AR and a Mini-14 ranch. The fold up peep on the ranch has a larger aperature than the the small peep on the AR, but the large peep on the AR is much bigger than the ranch.

I have heard of people drilling out the Mini's peep before. Frankly, I made a mistake getting the ranch. I intended to scope it, but that is not what this rifle is for, it is for plinking and light varminting, not target shooting. Should have gotten the standard Mini-14.

I was so frustrated that I got an AR. I never use the small aperture, always the large. In fact, Ashley makes a replacement A2 aperature system that enlarges both aperatures and makes both work at the same point of aim.

Delta force has a Ranch rifle peep replacement by Dakota.

looks like your best bet. If you get one, let me know how it works. 30 bucks.

Sonny,

I just checked their website and I don't think they carry that item anymore, at least I couldn't find it anywhere. XS used to be Ashley.

Go to the online store section......choose (RUGER)....and then choose standard or ranch model......they don't have a picture but you can see them at brownells

Well that's funny because I never use anything but the smaller aperatures. It really depends on how far you're shooting. I never shoot at anything under 200yds when I'm at my range. I picked up a standard Mini 14 a few months ago and was happy with the smaller aperature.

Sodapop,

I don't shoot past a few hundred yards. Can't see that far without a scope. The large aperture works well for my old eyes at short distances.

Maybe the Ranch Rifle has a smaller aperture than the standard one, but my aperture is definitely smaller than the smallest aperture on a Bushmaster XM-15A3 (w/detachable handle) because I was shooting the two guns alternately at the same range session. (The Bushy was a friend's, not mine.:( ) My mini is a 188 series; I don't know if that makes a difference.

The problem I had with the tiny Ranch aperture is that it's so small, it made the distant target (and even the front sight) fuzzy by reducing the contrast to zip. (I wear glasses too, which doesn't help.) My friend had set up a 6" piece of tan particle board at 50 yd, and through the mini aperture I couldn't even see it against the berm in the background. Through the AR aperture (even the smallest) it was clear as day. The difference really surprised me.

There seems to be a little bit of a glare off the Standard mini's rear site. It kinda has a glossy metal finish to it. Its no where near as good at my Bushmaster's aperatures.

Here's a Williams WGRS on a Mini-14 Ranch. You can interchange peeps with a variety of aperture sizes.
