Sigma vs P95

Every time I tell my Sigma story in here I get booed and hissed. I had a 1st gen .40, and everything about it was terrible. I bought it when I was young and I really hadn't fired or handled many pistols, I just read a lot about them in the magazines. I loved the grip, and I had always thought that the Glock hype would go away when someone 'worked all of the bugs out of it'. I thought the Sigma was that pistol.

The front sight fell out. It wouldn't feed any ammo reliably, I had to have it throated twice. One factory magazine wouldn't feed, the trigger return spring broke. The slide stop got jammed in the up position when I had it stripped once, I never figured out why. I was glad to get rid of it. Everyone says; "Hey it was just the first generation, you got a lemon," etc, and maybe they're right, but I don't really care. I was in the percentage S&W considered an acceptable for future customers soured.

I heard the first generations did have a lot of issues. Did you ever try sending it back? I don't know if S&W really "considered you an acceptable for future customers soured" as they usually are willing to try repairing any issues and from what I have seen stand behind their products.

No. That would have given me a gun that I knew was a train wreck once, may or may not have been fixed correctly (I had it throated under warranty twice and it was still iffy,), and I STILL would hate shooting it with that heavy trigger.

It was how I learned to do better homework and either shoot a gun before I buy it, or take the word from someone I trust and can articulate how to describe how a gun works for them.

I own a 9VE and like it a lot! I have over 10k rounds through it with one failure. The extractor broke. Smith wanted to replace it with free shipping both ways. I Chose to buy a extractor from NUMRICH. Stuck it in and kept on shooting. The trigger on mine was very heavy and down right crunchy. A bit of work and the crunch is gone and it's a tad smoother and lighter. It has the best OEM barrel I've ever seen. Much better than my M&P .45! I mean clean,,, and easy as heck to clean up. I did put a quick barrel lap on it. :)

If Smith ever runs a rebate or mag offer again I will buy the .40.

With all that said. If you can find a SD on sale. That is a worthy upgrade for close to the same money. :)

My understanding is that the recent Sigmas are much better than the original run of the pistol. For long-term durability/reliability, I'd go with the Ruger, for slimmer, easier carry, the Smith. Either is a solid choice in this price range.

BTW, the more recent P95s (with the rail) have a better grip than the originals, but the only option is the standard decocking safety. In s/s, the P95 is easy to maintain, and it just keeps going and going.

All my best,
Dirty Bob
