After a whole lot of ups & down I finally got my entire gun collection down to two guns and two calibers ....yep, its true, a Kahr P9 and Benelli Nova 12g., That's for another thread though....
I'm thinking as good as the Kahr is it might be a good idea to have a full size 9mm in the safe as backup, an extra shooter and the HD gun.
A local shop sells the P95 at $269 and the Sigma at $279(MIR)(these prices is what gave me the idea in the first place..).

What is the general consensus on these under $300 brand name pistols? From what I could find both seem to have a decent reputation(especially in this late in production) and no glaring issues. Opinions please?

I also picked up the Sigma because of the brand name and price. Size, weight, and feel are identical to a Glock 19 (I heard but do not know that there was a lawsuit because they are so close). The triggers are different but not bad as some 1st model owners would argue. My Sigma is more consistently accurate than my Glock or Ruger in my hands. Your results may be different. For a $10 difference, go with the one that feels natural in your hand.

I have two P95 Rugers that I have shot many "cases" of Wolf ammo through as well as a few thousands of my reloads, lead and jacketed. They are extremely reliable and I have killed many plates with them. I also have a Sigma 9VE that has been a good functioning gun for me as well. My opinion is that you don't have to spend mega bucks to get a good dependable pistol. I would highly recommend either gun depending on which fits you the best.

The trigger on the Sigma is "hard" for lack of a better word and the P95's trigger is "squishy". They are both dependable and as accurate as you will ever need.

On an aside, see if some of the other stores in CT will match Hoffman's (most likely will) on these for you. Hoffman's doesn't give the best customer service so I try to buy as little as possible there.

I have no problem with Hoffman's service...Over the years, I've had two problems I had to go back to them for after the sale and they were taken care with ease and minimun headache.
I really have my eye on the P95, I like the lower "out the door" price, no MIR to deal with, it is a hammer fired pistol and it is black.. I don't like shine on a gun intended of possible defensive use.

Both are dependable, servicable firearms.

If you plan to carry it, the Sigma will be more comfortable.

Even though I believe the P-95 is an excellent firearm for the price, the Sigma is, in my opinion, the best bang for the buck available anywhere in the world today. :)

I guess you all are calling them "values"...
I'll have to head over there this week and put some hands on time with them.
btw: this pistol will not be for concealed carry.

I have no experience with the Ruger but I have a Sigma .40VE and I'm happy with it. I wasn't at first, but it was because I was shooting Monarch ammo through it and it jammed every third or forth shot. Switched to quality ammo and haven't had a problem. It even shoots handloads well. The trigger is a bit stiff, but I did the spring removal trick and it lightened it up considerably. You can search Sigma trigger job on Youtube and see how it's done. It's really easy. It's my bedside gun and I would buy another in a heartbeat.

May depend on who ends up showing you the guns there...they have so many people working there on the weekends...maybe I am just unlucky. I did buy my 22/45 there.

I would call ahead though, I popped in a week ago and they did not have any LCP's or LCR's, I didn't check for the P95 specifically but the Ruger case looked bare. Lots of people with Xmas money and they sell a ton of Rugers there.

If the Ruger is a P95PR with a Picatinny rail then I would choose it over the Sigma. The Sigma uses a non-standard rail that needs an adapter if you choose to add a light to it for your "nightstand" gun. If it's simply a standard P95 w/o a rail then I'd go for the Sigma and an adapter.

My choice would be the Sigma. I've never owned one, but I looked at a 9VE at a shop the other day simply because I have heard good things about the recent guns (the originals were junk, but things have changed). I had heard that the trigger is awful, but based on my dry firing of it I can say that while it heavy, its not really that bad. Dry firing would help a lot I'm sure.

Anyway, the reason I would go with the Sigma is this:

S&W is offering a $50 rebate or two free magazines on the Sigma between now and the end of April. That makes it a better deal than the P95 if one starts with the assumption that they are of equal quality.

Both good IMO.. and i own both..

For carry, Sigma (thinner lighter)
For Target/Home defense/Truck gun, Ruger P95.

JOe

This is not the first time S&W has had to offer rebates/free stuff with Sigmas. Make ya wonder why they need to offer free stuff to sell Sigmas.

Just my .02,

Both good values. No, excellent values.
I'd expect them to be equal in reliability and accuracy. I'd go with the Ruger for its legendary toughness. But the Sigma is smaller so if youre carrying it, get the Sigma.

We have a pair of early P95s, and a neighbor has a 9mm Sigma, bought, coincidentally, with the S&W rebate. Another has the .40 S&W, bought under a different rebate program last year. The two Sigma owners like the P95 better than their Sigmas. The new P95, with the re-contoured grip, added gripping surfaces, and picatinny rail would seem to be even better.

The Sigmas both have hard triggers, even the .40 with over 1000 rounds through it.

Either will do the job. You pays your money, and takes your pick. :)

There are many reasons to put something on sale, over production, reduced sales, poor sales projections, money flow problems and on and on. It appears it is a real bother to you because of the rebate/sale. One can only assume that you have never fired one or own one and you are basing your comments on hearsay. As I stated I own both and IMO they are equal... Nuff said.......Good night

My experience with Sigmas:

1. My friend and I were at the range and his Sigma polymer frame shattered and completely failed while he was shooting. It's the only gun I've ever seen disintegrate while shooting it. I would never buy or own a Sigma. On the plus side, S&W sent him a brand new one. He promptly traded it at a gun store!

2. My brother is on a tight budget and has one and swears by it, even as his carry piece. To each their own.

I have never shot the Ruger P95 but am tempted to buy one at that low price!

I've had my sigma for about 3 weeks now. Put about 200 rounds through it of different types. Shot it dirty, with dirty ammo, intentional limp wristing, shooting upside down and sideways and it hasnt had any FTF or FTE yet. Though 200 rounds isnt enough for a real test, I am still very happy with it.
The heavy trigger will teach you how to *squeeze* a trigger. People who say that their Sigmas are inaccurate are not shooting correctly. Its actually more comfy to me than glock 23's I have shot.
I did the trigger job on mine and it made all the difference.
Other than the rail being non-standard, I am extremely happy with my purchase. I plan to put many more thousands of rounds through it.

I called the shop and they have several of both in stock(which I'm amazed at) so I'm going to put paws on them.
This shop also has a "10shot for $10" offer at their indoor range...so if they have either or both as range rentals I might try a few shoots.
Anyway, I report back.

thanks for all the input
