Silly AR thread, who has the shortest gas tube.

So I finally finished a new pistol upper for my AR pistol last week and tested it successfully this weekend. I am actually pretty happy with it given the silly parts I have used to build it. It will be pressed into armadillo thumping duty is short order.

The whole upper started around a 5-inch 1: 5 twist 300 BO barrel I got for a steal. The upper is just a blemish Bushmaster upper I grabbed and the handguard is a DPMS tubular handguard the previous owner cut shorter for some reason. The barrel was thread 9/16-24 (slightly odd for an 30 cal AR barrel) but I got lucky and got the last AAC 51T 9/16-24 threaded suppressor mount. I even got that on sale and just before Remington Outdoor Company went belly up. The BCG is pretty much nothing special.

When I first put it to ether I had a SeeAll sight on it I got from a fellow THR member in trade. It work OK but I wanted a bit more. I picked up a Vortex Sparc AR recently and paired that with a Micro3X magnifier that moves between this and my other AR with a Sparc AR.

The big slow down on this build was the gas port was a place holder hole and was never correctly sized. The gas port hole was only .059 diameter and when I first put it together it would not eject, it rarely got the bolt back far enough to even get the end of the empty case out of the chamber and into barrel extension. It was a single shot automatic. So I needed to drill the gas port out. The barrel has been FNC'ed and my normal drill bits would not break through that very hard finish. I had to order some carbide drills. After a bit of research I settled on starting at #46 (.081) drill and I could step up to a #44 (.086) or #42 (.0935) if needed. At this point I had as much money in carbide drills as I did the barrel, but I got lucky and the .081 drill did the trick.

It now cycles with both of my subsonic loads with and without the suppressor mounted. And let me tell you the subsonic are still painfully loud from a 5-inch barrel without the suppressor. Should have worn my ears for those shots.

None the less the whole point of this thread is the short gas tube. None of the standard tubes pistol, carbine, mid, rifle length, would work with a barrel this short. I had to order a custom tube from White Oak Armament. For reference a standard pistol length gas tube is ~6.69 inches long. The tube I ordered for this build was only 4.775 inches long. White Oak kindly bent it for me but they put the bends too far apart and due to my barrel nut I had to ended up straightening and re-bending it myself.

So anyone with a shorter gas tube on a build?

Mine would be my 9” 300bo but it’s a pistol length no where near as short as yours.

Where’d you get a cheap 5” 1:5? I wouldn’t mind putting one together just for subs.

I have had it for a year and half before finally putting it together this summer. The barrel came out of the demise of Remington here in Huntsville. No more of these specific barrels are to be had. Sorry.

I have a 5.56 with a 4.5" 1:5 KAK stainless barrel. Never measured the gas tube.

It shot about 6' fireballs initially. And hellacious loud.
Now it's a slave to a CMMG conversion kit in 22lr. Took the gas block and tube off and plugged the gas port. Will have to look, it's here someplace

One other cool thing with this build is I managed to bore sight it perfectly. I mounted the new Spark AR red-dot and magnifier once I had everything else back together after drilling the larger gas port and did a fast and dirty bore sight of the red dot across the basement at the corner of the door frame. Based on that short range bore sight I move the sight down 6 or 7 clicks and called it good. I put it on paper the first time at about 25 yards. I fired at an 8-inch shoot-N-C target and after I fired the first shot my brother commented, "Your not even on paper." I look around the target for a hit and couldn't find it so I fired a second shot and couldn't find it either at first. Then I found them both and sure enough the two bullet were hiding in the red 1/2-inch center spot touching on the edge at 10-o'clock.

Sometime its better to be lucky than good!

Going to a lot of trouble to kill armadillos. Unfortunately one of my dogs kills them and the other rolls on the decomposing carcasses. Armadillos dig up yellow jackets, but also damage gardens beds looking grubs.
A 9mm pistol is what I normally use and if I had time and wanted kill a dillo I would use a shotgun.

An armadillo had never hurt me, but yellow jacket wasps have on multiple occasions over the years.

Up in middle TN where I am hunting, armadillos are an invasive species, they are pretty hard on the turkey nests in the spring and so far none of the local predators seem to have figure out how to deal with them. I have killed them with everything from 38 Special to 450 Bushmasters. My 300 BO pistols, both my older 9-inch gun and my new 5-inch gun get pressed into general utility duty riding in the UTV or if I am not actively hunting get throw over a shoulder to carry while I am simply going for a walk on the property. Suppressed it's quiet enough to not need hearing protection (unlike the 450 BM). It's not really going to any trouble since a nice walk in the woods near sunset is very pleasant and if the wind is calm and the leave dry locating the armadillos if they are out is pretty easy in the woods. My record so far is 5 in one evening. Hitting an armadillo with a 220gr expanding bullet at subsonic velocity sound like hitting a truck tire with a hammer.

Ok I see it is fun to smack armadillos. So they have made it up to TN, I had no idea that they could live so far north and yes I could see them being hard on turkey nests. I wonder if they played a role in the decline of our local quail in NW FL.
I do not need a gun for armadillos when I got a Patch. He has a huge head and is a white english georgia farm dog that date back to colonial times.

Patch looks like he could deal with an armadillo just fine! Nice dog.

Who has the shortest gas tube? Id say this boy here would be the one to beat. :)

I though of that video when I created this post. I definitely think he has me beat but by probably less than an inch I would guess. That gas port appears is directly over the bullet, probably just ahead of the case mouth. With my barrel the gas port is ~ 1/4" to 3/8" inch in front of the nose of the bullet.
