I was reading the "Guns are my Hobby" thread where the originator of the thread asked if other gun enthusiasts were into amongst other things, Cars and Motorcycles. I pondered my preferences in handguns and motorcycles.
I prefer the .45 ACP in the 1911 as well as the revolver. In motorcycles, I have owned and raced Ducatis - a Twin with two big pistons it makes torque at a low rpm compared to the Japanese INline 4 cylinders. It's easier to ride it into a corner at a low er less hectic RPM and then ride the
torque curve accelerating out of the corners. The Inline-4 is much like a high cpacity 9mm in that it has twice the number of slugs to get the same job done On the World stage of roadracing the Italian Ducati Twins have fared very well against the various Japanese Inline-4s where both have
a displacement limit of 1000cc over the last 30 years. .

Different strokes for different folks of the same ilk

I have been in love with Ducatis since the First time I seen them in a 1990 Cycleworld mag. Reminded me of a ferrari on two wheels.

I love watching the rice rockets get eaten up by the Harley's and the Buells in NHRA. It would be oh so sweet if Ducati would get into that.

Then you run into the Car guys, We all feel bigger is better. Hince the 426 HEMI, 502 and 572 chevy, and the 428 and 429 Ford Engines.

I can not stand these kids and there weedeater cars. I like the lope of a good V-8 with a big cam. Hooker Headers that are uncorked, and the whine of a B&M 8-71 blower. I love the way NitroMethan Burns your eyes, nose, mouth. I love the smell of tire smoke in the morning. 8000 HP kicking you in the chest as a top fuel car screams past you at 300+ mph.

I cut my car teeth working on a 1970 Plymouth Superbird race car with a bad to the bone hemi. I helped my dad restore a 1954 Olds 88.

I remember the fun we had on the Salt Flats and in the garage.

I love fast cars, fast bikes, and even faster guns. Maybe that is why my first varmint rifle was a 220 Swift.

I have a love of all things mechanical too. I guess that ties into guns cars computers and bikes.

I do not have a bike right now but I find myself visiting all the manufactures web sites drooling just like I do when i get to Gun sites.

I like you prefer 1911's and revolvers. But unlike you I prefer four cylinders and cruisers. The manufacturers will not make motorcycles for people like me. I currently have a 1300cc V-Twin cruiser. I'm hoping to acquire a Yamaha V-Max this winter so that I can finally get the perfect bike for me.

If I mentioned my favorite car you'd be scratching your head and saying "never heard of 'em".

Benchrest is formula 1... Powerful, accurate, with really tacky paint jobs, and lots and lots of busty groupies...

(who are members of the Red Hat club, and like to play bridge in the clubhouse while "the boys" are out shooting...)

Your description of the Ducati reminded me of the BSA Victor 441 trail bike.

I rode one once. Hemorrhoid Special, if ever there was one.

One Cylinder. One piston. One carb. One spark plug.

Bang. Leaps eight feet forward and one foot up.

Comes down.

Next bang. Leaps ten feet forward and one foot up.

Comes down again.

Next bang. Leaps twelve feet forward and one foot up.

Comes down again.

Well, an exaggeration, but why let the truth stand in the way of a good story?

OK I'll play. . . . .

I like the .303 Enfield and the Triumph TR6, the .455 Webley revolver and the Triumph Bonneville, the Remington 870 and anything that "Runs like a Deere", the Colt .45 automatic and my Ford F 150. BTW nice looking Olds.

Hey guys, let's keep it to a comparo of guns vs engine types

Now there yah go not bringing in a bit of some gun comparo to cars/engine tyhpes.

FOr the first poster - The Ducati is a Big V-Twin, with supremo handling
what handgun demos those characteristics? I had the DUcati Monster that had the old air cooled engine that only developed 80+ Horsepower
whereas the inline-4s of similiar displacement had 110-130+ HP - and this is comparable to a .45 ACP with 230 gr. vs a .357 Mag 125 gr. or 9 mm and 115 gr. grain bullet being deliverd at 400-500 FPS higher velocity. The difference with the Ducati is that it has as much torque at 30000 RPM through 7500 rpm at least the old air cooled ones as a similiar displacement
Inline 4 has at about 7000 RPM so this is the equivalent of a big bore shooter firing less shots but delivering more per shot as a smaller bore with more bullets to deliver to deliver the same power.

and the other side of the coin is handling not just going fast in a straight lilne, drag racing is cool, I had a '66 GTO with a buuilt 389 with an ISky cam
3-Bbl. Holley carb with Doug's Headers with cutouts for street racing
back in the Muscle car era as well as a half dozen '55-'57 CHevy small blocks
but grew into BMW 2002 Tii, Alfa Romeo GTV that could actually go around the corner if you have to toss around the old combustibles prior to the EPA
smog crap which I guess is equivalent to the anti-gun put safetys on everything and limit the horsepower of vehicles and NO CRUISING which is like in the gun scene of finding it hard to find a place to shoot

Anyway back to the comparo - Big Bore vs smaller bore but high capacity
magazines, well yah gotta aim and hit with twice as many.

If I ever had wanted to ride a Muscle Cruiser it would have been a V-Max....
but as soon as the action got quick I.E. in the twisty grades that lead
up and down to the nearby Snake RIver I'd want ,my big bore but fine handling Ducati - or if hiking in the same area my S & W 625 and/or 1911.

Easy answer for me.

1911's (Springfield and Kimber) and an 07 four door Jeep Wrangler Sahara 4X4Unlimited, in black of course - both slab sided, big enough and strong enough to get the job done. Yep - 1911 and Jeep. Of course, YMMV.

Peace and blessings,
Laib

Similiar Flavors of guns and engines....

Glad you brought this up.

Some calibers/auto engines that compare favorably:

.454 Casull with 454 Chevrolet LS-6 (450-460 horsepower max.) [A high-revving big-block with enormous torque.]

.44 Magnum with 440 Chrysler Magnum (375-390 hp max.) [I couldn't honestly compare the old .44-40 with the 440 Mopar, despite the obvious numerical similarities.]

.350 Remington Magnum with 350 LT-1 Chevrolet (in the neighborhood of 370 horsepower) [Well, all this is relative, of course.]

.340 Weatherby with the 340 Mopar engine (275-290 very conservative horsepower) [Another case of similarity of numbers, actually.]

Some that don't compare all that favorably:

.318 Westley Richards with 318 Mopar [The British .318 WR was, and is, a very effective big game cartridge, despite the small caliber designation, and does not compare with Chrysler's workhorse light-duty V8.]

.348 Winchester with 348 Chevrolet [The .348 still has a great reputation on big game, but the 348 Chevrolet V8 engine is an oversized, overweight, somewhat underpowered museum piece.]

.425 Westley Richards with 425 Oldsmobile and Buick. [Yeah, I do like British cartridges, and you do have to be at least my age to remember these engines from the 1960s. The .425 WR has proven itself well against dangerous game, while the 425 engines were noted for not having the torque of their larger-displacement descendants, the 455's.]

.455 Webley with 455 Pontiac/Buick/Oldsmobile engines [The 455 V8's were big car engines with a lot of pulling power and considerable horsepower potential. The .455 Webley was hard-hitting with its heavy, large-sized bullets, but there the similarities end.]

I find this interesting. My motorcycle is a Honda RC51, big 1000cc twin built to beat Ducati at their own game. I get Honda engineering and reliability with big twin low to mid range power and lots of noise. My 86' Monte Carlo had the stock 305 swapped out for the 350 from a chevy caprice police car. I then had all the enviornmentaly friendly fuel injection and such ripped off and replaced with a big holley four barrel and edelbrock intake. My favorite pistol is a Sig P220 in SAO. Why? I get Sig reliabilty and craftmanship, big .45 thump, no double action mushy trigger and no secondary back strap safety. My bike will out run a Ducati, car will outrun a police cruiser and gun will out shoot a 1911. Life is grand. Now I just need to practice riding, driving, and shooting enough to be as good as my toys. :neener:

I ride a 76 shovelhead "slightly modified" of course. Big twin thumper. It's big, slow and loud compared to other's and I can't ride it everyday. It doesn't fit every situation however it fits me emotionally and it feels right when the time is right. I also love my 1911, style, grace, and effective as all get out.
On the other hand I usually carry an XD40... smaller, faster, lighter, effective as all get out.... but just a tool to me.

I ride a red Ducati Multistrada 620, I drive a Toyota Tundra 4x4 silver colored and prefer 45 ACP In my blued steel revolvers and .357 Magnum in my stainless steel revolvers. I own a Glock and a Kahr, only two autoloaders I own.

My EDC is a 22-4 and a 442 when I am Off-Duty.

Biker

I ride a CBR 600 RR and carry a .40 Hk Usp Compact. They're both strong, light middleweights designed for comfortable use. The CBR is only the tiniest bit more controllable :D

I'm a "keeper" type guy. I buy something and keep it until forever. If it ain't broke, I don't fix it. But, I do like to tinker and hot rod.

When I was 14, I bought a 1970 Mercury Cougar with an original 351 cleveland/auto/9 inch. I still have it.
All those years, I ate up a lot of cars street racing who had no clue what my car could do. I also clocked over 300k miles on the odometer driving all over the country.

Much like my car, my 45 colt revolver was off the beaten path and I took a lot of guff for carrying it. Especially from the brass puker crowd. But, when it was go time, I knew it backwards and forwards and even had my own personal touches to bring up the performance.

Nowadays, I'm into motorcycles too but still have my car. I like the fuel injected 4's that run forever, get good mileage, are full of easy to use horsepower, and sit comfortably since I'm not made of money, like riding, but am not some kind of leatherclad weekend Hell's Angel wannabe yuppie.
Same for firearms. I'm shifting to modern technology, modern calibers, modern designs, and modern skills to complement them.

However, my old Mercury isn't going anywhere, and neither are my wheelguns.

I love diesel cars, especially Mercedes. However, I don't have any German firearms, or any guns that can shoot vegetable oil :p

But, I do like chunk-o'-steel guns that are extremely durable and reliable, which matches it pretty well.

Ruger 10/22 = Chevy Small Block Engine

Can run box-stock, or tune as much as time/budget allows, and anywhere in between.

My favorite guns are my 2 Sig P220s one in black one in stainless. My favorite cars are old chevy muscle cars and America's Sports Car. '67 Chevelle SS 396 being the top of the muscle car heap for me, yea I know the LS-6 was faster but the '69 was better looking. The '67 Corvette was the best looking sports car ever made. I'll take mine with an L88 black with a red stinger, 4 speed, rally wheels and sidepipes, thank you. And the RC51 is my bike of choice.

45 cal thump, big block thump, and v-twin thump.

I shoot a SAR-1. Where can I buy a Trabant? :D

My "dream car" is a Volvo S40T5 AWD, with the '08 Cadillac CTS (with 300hp V-6 and 6-speed) as a close second. I'd probably take an '04 or '05 CTS-V over either, though. Dunno what the gun equivalent would be, but I really like Rock River AR's.

Some calibers/auto engines that compare favorably:

Oh, yeah. One more.

351 Ford Windsor V8 and .351 Winchester Self-Loading. [The 351 Windsor didn't get a lot of respect from Cleveland buffs, and the .351 WSL was only a moderate success for whatever reason(s).]

I've noticed my preferences in both guns and autos change over the last 2 or 3 years. In my early/mid 20's I loved to bang away on my AK's, AR's, & Glocks @ 10-50 yards, just to basically have fun and that's about it. In my early 20's I drove a Mitsu 300GT and an Eclipse GST (both reasonably fast and decent on gas). I also rode a Honda RVT 1000 and just recently sold my 03 GSXR 600 bike.

Fast forward a few years (approaching 30 now). I'm looking for a bike to replace my Suzuki and will most likely go with a cruiser this time (Jap or Amer..... undecided). I currently drive an 03 Toyota Tacoma and the wife drives an 07 Corolla S. I also have 3 classic Chevy trucks (71,84,85). 1 has a 4.3l v-6, one has a 355ci 8, and the other has a 468ci 8. I think I'm going to look at picking up a new Jeep Rubicon or Unlimited as my next vehicle.

As far as guns go. Lately I've been shooting almost exclusively 100-300 yards with bolt action rifles. I loove to take my time and get a good shot in VS. burning up ammo for a good time.

I guess there is a relation to my guns and vehicles as far as my preferences go. I guess I'm getting a little older......... and a little slower!!!

I like most cars, motorcycles, and guns, from a Harley Sportster to a Yamaha R1 to a Plymouth Road Runner to a Subaru STI to a Springfield 1911 to a Glock anything, but I especially like strong-running pushrod V-8s and .45 ACP handguns. I think the two go together nicely.
