Hi all,

If I have an L.C. Smith 12 ga double from my grandad's collection, is that the same L.C. Smith of typewriter fame?

Trying to figure out what I have here....

Elsies are very good shotguns. One of only a few sidelocks made here, it's got a few idiosyncracies.

Do not drop the hammers with the shotgun disassembled.

Sidelocks take a bit more wood away at the front of the stock. keep an eye on the area for cracking.

Some Elsies have chambers shorter than modern ammo dictates. Some of the oldest have twist/Damascus barrels, not for firing with modern ammo.

Like all old shotguns, it should have a good smith look it over before firing.

But chances are it's in fine shape and just waiting to go out again.

Enjoy....

No Twist or Shout :)

Hi Dave et. al.,

Thanks all for the great insights.

The LC is a definite steel barrel rather than a Damascus twist. I have a Damascus twist gun from Grandad too and that old legend will never be shot again. I can definitely see that the LC is steel.

I'll have it checked out by a gunsmith, but thanks again for the insight. I'll share pictures soon.

John
