After years of buying numerous pistols of different types and brands, the time has come for me to simplify. This is due to a couple of factors, one being the rising cost of ammunition, the other that no matter how many handguns I purchased, I never felt that I was developing well as a shooter. I've come to realize that if I had spent as much time practicing with a few pistols as I have purchasing many, I would do a better job tearing up targets at the range, and perhaps even be a more formidable opponent in a gunfight.

Over the past few weeks I've been selling off nearly all of my handguns. Some rifles, too. As of today, the three pistols pictured below are the only handguns I own. And two of them are identical.

We've all heard the adage, "Beware the man with one gun; he probably knows how to use it." Insofar as possible, I'm attempting to become a man with one gun.

I purchased the Ruger Mark III Hunter last week. My only regret is that I didn't buy it sooner. Already it is making me look like a better shooter. And the cost of ammo can't be beaten. I'll be shooting a lot more .22 in the future and reaping the rewards.

I've owned the HK P2000 on the left since January of this year. It has quickly become my carry gun of choice—maybe my favorite polymer pistol of all time—replacing a Glock 19 which has since been sold. I liked the P2000 so much I decided to purchase another one to serve as a backup. The P2000 on the right arrived on Saturday.

For the next year or so, these three (in reality two) pistols will be my only handguns. I'm going to concentrate more on the fundamentals; get to really know my weapon; become "the man with one gun." After that year is up, I'll evaluate, but I wouldn't be surprised if I decide to keep things simple. I'm already seeing the benefits.

Anybody else here decided to simplify?

I've simplified, only semi autos for handguns and shotguns, and I don't currently own any lever action or pump rifles.:) But I have been looking at the Taurus pump in .45 LC, if only it had a peep sight.

Sell guns:confused: Never. But I am simple when it comes to how many types of ammo. 22, 9mm, 38sp/357mag, 45auto. In 9 hand guns. All but the 22 reloaded.
Now if I could simplify the rifle chamberings.:D

I kept things simple when I got into guns (again) about a year ago.

I have four:
.22LR Browning Buckmark with MatchDot sight
9mm Walther p99c for carry
9mm CZ 75B for competition and range
.45acp Sig P220 for Bullseye and Range

Don't plan on getting any more. I'm spending my time with chronographs, loading data, and GlockTalk/Reloading. Great fun and I don't spend too much on ammo.

Like the OP, I'm shooting 75% .22, 15% 9mm, and 10% 45.

IMHO you are a wise to do it. I never could understand the "he with the most toys wins" mentality.

I buy a gun try it out .If it's not for me, time to get rid of it and try something else. Now I have 2 .380's and a .22cal

I couldn't possably.

But them I'm a collector as well as a shooter.

I do observe that I tend to type... John Browning designs, and knock offs
(1911, Hi Power, CZ75 Tokorev...)

And also single actions.. the CZ75 is a B model... CZ52...

And untill reciently my 1911's have been my 'fighting guns' that I have trained with. I picked up the Glock due to likely future events which will have me using one... and I've trained with it till I feel I can do what I must with it.
I put my 1911 back on me today... and I'm glad.

But I own guns for the joy of owning them, not just for utilatarian use.

Edited to add: I thought about it and I guess I have. (WARNING, shameless plug ahead) I put some guns that I have collected over the years that don't fit in up for sale!

But nothing like you are talking about!

I hear that. The only gun I have that I second guess myself on buying is my Five-SeveN which was really a protest purchase. I am kinda wishing I had spent that money on an AR, but oh well. I can't bring myself to sell a handgun. I keep thinking about it, and I could sell 2 or 3 of them if I *had* to but it would still tear me up to do so.

I only own three handguns thus far and each serves a niche. As my wife and daughter also shoot, the stable will likely grow to accomodate their needs.

Walther P22: Affordable practice with a great little gun.

Bersa Thunder .380 CC: This is a great little pocket gun that can go anywhere. As my wife does not have a carry weapon of her own, she is going to use this for the time being.

Springfield Armory XD-40 Service: I picked this up yesterday and it will be my primary carry gun. I shot it for the first time today and absolutely love it. I've got a Fist belt, OWB holster and mag pouch on the way, as well as a CrossBreed SuperTuck IWB. This is the one I'll be spending time with.

Other than a carry gun for my wife, the only other guns I plan to buy are a Browning Buckmark and an XD-45 Compact. Well, maybe a CZ PO1. Of course, the Walther P99 is also fantastic and matches my P22...

I own lots of firearms simply because of the joy of owning them for whatever reason. History, cool factor, whatever. I have come to a bit of an epiphiny regardling simplification though and that is that I have found much wisdom in the use of the simple "obsolete" revolver and speedloader. I won't go into all my reasons but a nice .357 revolver and several speadloaders or speedstrips just sort of fits me.

i tend to cycle through my favorites, and stick with one or two at a time. but unlike some, i don't feel compelled to instantly liquidate everything else i'm not shooting at the moment, because i know there's a chance i'll eventually cycle back to it, and miss it if it's not there.

my recomemdation is to just put them away and pretend like you only have one gun. that's less bothersome than wishing you hadn't sold something you only temporarily forgot you loved imo.

Did that last year. Got rid of four handguns, a shotgun and two rifles that I hadn't fired in years. In their place I got a G19 and a G26. I freed up alot of space in my safe and simplified my ammo inventory. Unfortunately I'm now wanting a Glock 35 or perhaps a G17 longslide - if I can find one. Well at least it will still be in 9mm.

If you really have the gun jones, it won't work. It sounds good on paper but you will end up with more than you have now if you get rid of them. Put them aside for a while and see if you don't miss them. I enjoy a cap n ball revolver for a change of pace.

YMMV

I have decided to simplify too by getting rid of .40 S&W and .357 Sig. Too expensive to shoot and and doesn't do anything for me that isn't covered by other handgun calibers... .38, .357, .32, .380, .22, Mak, Tok. .45ACP, .45LC, 9mm and .38S&W. It was an easy choice as it only involved dumping 3 guns.

Maybe that cheapo IJ Cadet will go next and I can dump my .38 S&W needs too.

simplify = commonality

S&W 642-2; Ruger GP100; Ruger SP101; S&W 15-5 (coming soon)...lowest common denominator....38 spl, .38 spl +p

subgroup common denominators...

S&W 642 & S&W 15....38 spl; .38 spl +p

Ruger GP100 & Ruger SP101....357 magnum; .38 spl; .38 spl +p

longgun commonality is that selected calibers are common and have been around a long time...

Remington 870 in 12 ga; Winchester M70 in .270; Marlin in .30-30 (coming soon)

Later!

I like to simplify but see no need to get rid of anything. I think of it as "I have a G23 and a Mk III primarily, and lots of occasional fun/specialty guns".

Most of my shooting is with the G23 or Mk III, but I rotate through everything else to stay familiar and enjoy them. I do keep a good supply of .40, 9mm and .45 and .22LR on hand, but only a couple of hundred rounds for each of .38, .44, .380, and 9x18 Makarov.

It is nice to have a .38 for taking new shooters to the range. My kids have 9mms so I have a couple to shoot with them, too. And I just plain enjoy the .45 and .44. Then I have to have the .380 for pocket carry.

For the next few years all new pistols are going to be Glocks, 1911, and .357 revolvers. Once I get to my "legacy quota" (enough for my use and some for passing on to my kids/grandkids) then I will branch off again to other models and calibers.

The basic principal is sound though, practice with a small number of models and calibers in order to build up expertise with them and focus resources on them.

I have tried to simplify, scaling down from 23 calibers to 22 (I got rid of my M95 Steyr). However, ammo just seems to appear from the back of that big brown truck.

Strangest caliber I don't have in stock yet is the 450-.577 Martini Henri cartridge for my Martini Henri Gahendra carbine. 100 bucks for 20 rounds. I think it will continue to wait. :D

Some interesting posts here. And some of you are more "complicated" that I ever was! Nothing wrong with that, though. I'm discovering more and more that I'm just not the collector type. I can't stand owning guns that I don't shoot often. And I don't have the time or money to shoot very often. So at this stage of my life, simpler is better.

I have those I shoot a lot, those I shoot a little, those I hunt with, one I carry religiously (AND shoot more than any other). The balance I want to have & my philosophy is, they aren't hurting a thing in the gun vaults and if I decide I want to use one, I have it.

I'm heading that way, sort of; I've decided to stay with 3 main calibers, .380, .38/.357, and .45

I don't have a lot of guns and I'm trying to stop myself from buying more just to get more for the fun of it. I'm trying mainly just to purchase ones that'll fill a specific carry need. Based on this philosophy I really only want to buy a compact .45 to be my "heavy" caliber carry. I have one 9mm (Kahr P9) a S&W J frame for pocket/light carry, an SP101 w/3" for woods/fishing carry, and a P3AT for true pocket carry. I have a few other handguns like a bersa .380 that I don't carry but I'll pass on to my children.

I'm a small guy so I can't comfortably handle a lot of double stacked weapons so I tend to stick with single stack, more compact weapons.

Not sure how simple this is but each gun fills a slot and I can cover from true pocket to the 9mm and eventually to a compact .45. I've tried .40s but their more expensive and much more snappy on the recoil.

Eventually I'd like to get set up to reload .38's and .45 as they're my two favorite rounds to fire.

So, it's one more; a compact .45 and I'm done for life...;)

God Bless
Gideon

Ok, simplify. What would you get rid of? I'd think the minimum would be the following:

1 subcompact pocket auto, the gun for when I can't carry a gun.
1 compact auto, normal CCW gun.
1 full size, full capacity auto for range use and pin shoots.
1 1911 (come on, everyone needs a 1911!)
1 .22lr target auto
1 snubby .357/.38 for a coat pocket
1 4" .357/.38 revolver nightstand gun
1 large caliber (.44mag or above) revolver for recoil therapy.
1 .22 target revolver, primarily used for introducing new shooters.

I don't think I could drop below that level and still consider all the bases covered... and I don't hunt with handguns, or that list would be considerably longer.

To each their own, I guess :D

I once tried to simplify. I actually got down to 3 handguns, but I started missing the ones I sold and ended up owning a whole lot more when the buying urge came back on. If I did it again, the only semi-autos that would survive would be the Glocks 19, and 20. The revolvers would make it to, except for maybe, and thats a biiiiiiiggg MAYBE, the .500 Smithy. Come on, who wouldn't want to own the most powerful handgun in the world???

Tell ya what, I'll help you simplify, after you sell off what ever you are going to, then send me the leftover ammo :D . I'll pay shipping.

I've already figured out I can't simplify, I sold my olny 32 auto 18 months ago. Last month the guy comes to me wanting to sell me a gun, (his wife is in the hospital and he needs gas money), so I tell him to let me see it. It's the same 32 I sold (actually traded) to him. so it's back in the stable now. but only to help him out with gas money.

so if you want to send me your unwanted ammo let me know.
