I'd recommend the .357 as well. You have plenty of time to pick up a .44, and getting the .357 first lets you shoot cheaper while still making a boom big enough to make the guy three lanes down stop shooting until you stop to reload. I love the .357 round, and shooting .38 +ps is still fun without as much recoil. Regular .38s feel like a .22 after a cylinder or two of full-house 357s.
I still want a big-bore eventually, but I'm never giving up my .357s. There is a pretty big jump in recoil from .357 to .44 Magnum, and .357s in a lighter gun can be painful on their own. My SP101 leaves me with a tender hand after a trip to the range, while single action 357s just feel "right".
Believe me, a .357 will do everything you want. You can get the .44 for novelty purposes later.
