Single Action Revolvers, .22s

Hey I am looking for some .22 single shot revolvers, or something relateviely cheap and fun to shoot. I've always been fascinated with the "old west" guns and want to get something like a late 1850 early 1860s Colt Single Shot Army

I was wondering if anyone made any guns like this, for under $200..just a nice plinking gun..any ideas? Thanks

I assume you have your terms wrong. Are you looking for a single shot pistol like a derringer, or a single action revolver?

The Ruger Bearcat is an excellent choice. I've had an original for decades, still take it to the range, and always enjoy the experience. I've got two of the newer models and also am on the prowl for the 50th anniversary edition. You can't beat it for function, reliability, and just plain fun.

Under $200? That's tough. The Heritage Rough Rider fits your price range, but mine is horribly innacurate. My son likes to shoot it, but his expectations are somewhat lower than mine. If you can find a Bearcat for less than $200 you're better at shopping than I am.

I would argue for the accuracy of the rough rider. Although the one I shot had a pretty long barrel.

I gather that the accuracy isn't something that has Freedom Arms running for the drawing board, but that's not a surprise and it has a hammer block that's "different".

My advice is to save some more money up and buy a Ruger. As I have said before, if it comes down to not buying a gun at all or having to wait a long time, I'd go with the Heritage Rough Rider just to have something to shoot for the time being. You can step up in quality later. Enjoy.

I dunno about the Ruger SAS. While it is heirloom quality and all I am not impressed by accuracy or the trigger at all.

Mine shoots .22 mags very accurately, but not so much with regular .22's. Fine for plinking but I don't see it winning any bullseye competitions.

Not a fan at all of the Roughrider either. I have shot them and they are at best just "alright".

I would look further into that Plinkerton.

There is another, if you really want a SAA-style .22. They're very nice, though price-wise they compete with the Ruger, not the lower-end guns.

the Ruger is designed for the 22mag (.224) That is why it shoots better with it

If you would like something cheap and fun to shoot then I'd say the Rough Rider is a good pick. I'd think a Plinkerton would also be a good choice. I have a Rough Rider I picked up locally for $150 OTD with a three and a half inch barrel and birds head grips. The gun feels really good in my hand and is fun to shoot. I've been satisfied with its off hand accuracy. I've not accuracy tested the gun for groups.

Another vote for the Rough Rider, with an asterick. They are kinda like the Taurus Model 94 DA 22LR, in that you either get a great one or a junker. Bad RRs delivery poor accuracy, light strikes and parts breakages. Good ones deliver superb accuracy and years of trouble free fun.

Both of mine have been excellent, offering up surprising accuracy. Currently, I own a 5.5" barrel model with open sights that I bought online from Bud's gunshop. Granted, I've got less than 100 rounds through it but so far it is a keeper.






I would have considered a Single Six (used), but have yet to find one for less than $250 locally, much less one with open sights (which I prefer). In fact, I've never seen a SS with open sights in person.

Plus, I like the more traditional "4 click" design of the Heritage.

That Uberti Stallion does look nice!

First, do not buy a full size steel single action in .22 LR. They are heavy as heck.

Look around at the gun shops and shows for a used Ruger Single Six or Colt Scout, the former preferred. The Bearcat is (IMHO) too small for good plinking, though it is fun.

My personal choice would be to try and find a S&W K-22, which will not have the "cowboy" aura, but which will have excellent sights, and a superb trigger pull.

I like how the Plinkerton looks, but seems cheaply built, but I am not looking for superb quality anyhow.

I don't want a heavy plinking gun so, WHo makes a light full size .22 then, in my price range..thanks

I agree. My friend bought one for $160. The overall quality was much better than I expected given the price. While the build quality of my Single Six is better, I was a little more accurate with the Rough Rider.

In addition, my friend ordered the extra .22WMR cylinder for $25. Not a bad convertible for less than $200, IMHO.

If I didn't already have a pair of .22 revolvers, I would definitely buy one of these guns.
