I have been invited to a cowboy style shoot. You have to have two single action revolvers, a double barrel shotgun ( or a specific pump that I cannot remember) and an era approriate lever action.

I am good to go on the long guns. I need to pick up the single action revolvers... I am usually a ruger guy, but with $ being what it is, i wonder if there is a less expensive, but reasonablyy well built alternative. That being said, I will always consider Rugers. I am looking for something in 38/357 to match my Winchester 94.

Thanks for your thoughts.

^ Yup. Both cowboy matches I've observed were swarming with the friendliest people you could ever hope to meet. Most of them will practically force you to try their equipment.

I own a Ruger New Vaquero, and I love it to death, but a pair would run about $900 new. I've seen a lot of used Ubertis in excellent shape, you could probably get a basic pair for $550-$600 if you shop around and you don't mind getting basic models.

Sure agree with Jim Watson. They'll line up to loan you a pistola for the shoot. Great bunch of folk and you'll have fun.

You decide to buy, you like Ruger's then get some. However for a few dollars more you can buy the USFA's. They are some of the finest SA's right out the box.

Try them all before you buy. I started with Uberti's and never regretted it but over the years I have worked my way up to Colt's but still shoot some of the Uberti's even now.

They are all fun guns. Good luck

A friend of mine just picked up a pair of used stainless Old Model Vaqueros over the last month and a half. One was from a dealer and the other was a private sale. He paid a little over $800 for the two of them. Both are very nice SA revolvers in like new condition.

When you get ready to buy, check the SASS classifieds first. It's FULL of pairs of sixguns being sold as the wife decides she doesn't want to play [.38's for sale] or she wants to get more serious [.32's for sale] or the husband decideing to go ''gamer'' [.45's for sale] all sorts of stuff over there. They want ya to be a member [$35.00] to sell, but to encourage new members, anyone can buy.

The pump shotgun you must have is a Winchester Model 1897 (one of which I have). They're great fun, and I'd advise getting one regardless of whether or not you ever get into cowboy action shooting. I've never had much of a yen to do it myself, once I read up on the rules. It bothers me that I could take my dad's .357 magnum Ruger bird's head Vaquero, when neither that gun nor that caliber ever existed on the frontier, and I could compete with it. But if I showed up with my .44 Russian S&W Frontier Double Action, which was made in 1886, I would not be allowed to compete with that.

If'n you want to shoot your real period guns even though double action, go with NCOWS. They try harder for authenticity. No birdshead Rugers or other single action "reproductions" of guns that did not exist in the first place.

Hmmm... Looking at their web page, they aren't anywhere even close to where I live. Guess they'll have to do some growing first.
