Single point slings for AR's

Can someone help me with a few questions regarding single point slings?

First, how does one attach the sling adapter to the rifle?

What is a good brand of adapter?

What is a good brand of sling?

I would love to see photos of an AR with the sling attached, if you have one.

First, how does one attach the sling adapter to the rifle?

Depends on the rifle/stock combination. Typically you remove the stock and install a sling adapter plate between the lower receiver and the lower receiver extension (aka buffer tube). However, some stocks, like the UBR feature quick detach swivels built in where this is unnecessary and some adapter plates, like the Magpul ASAP (designed for ambidextrous use) have a more involved installation process.

A lot of this is personal preference. It really isn't complex. All you are doing is taking a single loop of good quality canvas/nylon/etc. and running it through a metal loop. It is hard to screw up too badly.

I would ask myself the following questions:

1. How do I want to attach the sling to the rifle? Snap-shackle? Quick detach push-button swivel? Sling loop?

2. Do I want the ability to quickly attach/detach the rifle from the sling?

3. Do I want the ability to quickly be able to detach myself from the sling?

4. How wide a sling do I need to support the weight comfortably?

I'd also do a search here on "single point slings" and see what turns up.

I am a huge fan of these guys slings, and have three of them, they come with a extra loop and buckle/speed click in piece, that you can just loop around and attach to the wrist of your weapon, or they have a d-ring type click in piece, that should snap into your various sling swivels on your ar, especially around your buttstock ring... and they are 25 bucks!!!

I like the Magpul single point sling and their ASAP. It makes transitions from strong side to weak side very quick and easy. No getting tied up in two point slings during transitioning in other words.

There are Youtube vids of Travis Halley using the magpul system; very impressive.

I like the Magpul as well except for the clip attaching the MS2 to the ASAP. I know your supposed to always control your rifle and the sling isn't there to let it hang. However, if you need to transition to a pistol, I'd assume you let go of the rifle and let it swing to your weak side in order to draw from a holster. The spring in the clip isn't very strong.

The other day I was wearing my M4gery while I moved a few rifles around from the safe to cases in the garage. The rifle was hanging tight, tucked safely under my left arm as I held 2 other rifles and, WAM!, the Bushmaster smacked the concrete. I cursed loudly. I couldn't figure out what the heck happened since it seemed like the sling just broke and let the rifle drop. I reconstructed the crime to realize that bumping the spring loaded clip on the MS2 was enough to release it from the ASAP. I was only happy I didn't try to instinctively catch the Bushy and let one of the other 2 more expensive rifles drop since they would not have handled the fall as well. The Bushy M4type is fine but there's a nice little ding on my Aimpoint M4 that I covered pretty well with a sharpy for now
Now the sling attachment wears some duct tape.

In order to properly use a single point, you need a sling mount at the rear of the receiver similar to something like this.



If you don't, the sling will hang far too low.

Yep. Remove the buffer and spring, back off the castle nut, remove the buffer tube from the lower, remove the stock plate and replace with a new one.

You will find plates with round holes for hardware, or slots for sling webbing.

If you want a right handed plate with a round hole, I have this one I don't need.

I use a Gear Sector Single point sling. It's the best one I've tried yet. Functional without any bling, or useless padding. The straps are stiff enough to hold their shape, but they are decently soft as well.

It's adapters clip on, so you only need one sling for all your rifles. Just get an adapter for each of the web style mounting point. For all of your quick release and Hk adapters you only need one cause it's easy to move to each gun so equipped.

I use a MI Hk single point sling. You just remove the buttstock to install, no buffer tube removal required. I slides right over the cabine buffer tube and attaches with a bolt that clamps it in place.

Then I use a Gear sector Hk sling adapter to attach the sling. Clips on and off.


rainierarms.com has a good selection of good slings adapters and mounts. Pretty easy to figure out once you look at what each part is for.

Look at the Troy too, I've been happy with the design. I like padding, so I guess it's a personal preference thing. Standing around all day with a rifle on with no padding gets painful
