What sling for an AR?

One point slings are good if you're going to be getting into and out of a vehicle with the rifle. For everything else, not so much.

Three point slings were cool when they first came out. They're a bit cumbersome and tend to catch on things because of the extra straps.

A modern two point sling with a quick adjuster usually fits the bill for most shooters. Check out the BFG and VTAC offerings, I think you'll like them.

I've ran all 3 on black rifles at one time or another. Agree with Leben, 3 point slings are the devil. As soon as I bring the weapon in for a mag change, that third strap is always in the way. Gets in the way of th bolt release and invariably gets wrapped around my hand when returning to the stock. Never again.

Single point slings have their place. Bungee too. The bungee is to facilitate muzzle strikes. I don't know if you plan on doing that with your rifle or not. Also an AR-10 isn't really a small rifle. You might notice some bounce when walking. It will also move alot more when you do up to the point of battering your legs. I do like single point slings on a shotgun. Keeps the strap out of the way of the pump.

So that leaves a 2 point. Basically pick one you like. There are so many. Padded unpadded, quick disconnect, quick release, quick adjust and every attachment method imaginable. For hunting, I might be tempted to run a good old fashioned 1907 sling.

The 3-point slings are old school tech.

As for sling, it depends on use. If you need a sling as a shooting age and carrying strap (over the shoulder) then the 1907 leather sling is difficult to beat.

If you need to carry a rifle at the ready, over he shoulder, use it for support, etc. then the two-point quick adjust slings are the most versatile.

The single point slings are basically for vehicles and being able to switch shoulders rapidly without getting the sling all tied up. They are handy in competition if you use a sling there.

If you want a 2-point quick adjust then the Vickers VCAS or the Viking VTAC depending on which way you prefer your adjustment slider to work. I like the Magpul MS3 because it offers all the advantages of the quick-adjust two points but can be quickly converted to a single point sling.

The bungee is good for maneuverability, too.

I'm a fan of the Magpul MS3. If Magpul would put a bungee section on their sling, then it would be the best sling ever.

I've been using the Viking Tactical 2 point quick adjust sling and have been very pleased with it.

I also have the VTAC sling as does my brother. I think that they are well made. They adjust easily and seem to be a solid product at a reasonable price. When I was shopping for mine, I seem to remember people talking about Blue Force Gear (or something similar) as well.

x2....I run one on my AR-15 and also my FNH SLP 12 gauge during training classes. So easy to adjust the length with just one hand.

I like convertible 1 to 2 point slings. Like the Magpul MS slings and Viking Tacticals.

If one were to choose the Viking Tactics Wide Padded Sling would the upgraded version be worth the extra few dollars? It seems to have metal hardware.

Zak Smith's excellent article on slings is IMHO the best/most informative article I've seen. Just google (sorry lost the link) Zak Smith slings, demigollic. Went from a single point to a double point on his advice. :D

It's up to you, really. Some folks want the added longevity and durability that metal buckles provide when using heavier rifles. For an AR10, either one would work just fine.

I have the Blue Force Gear (BFG), VTAC and VCAS on various rifles. All work about the same and I've had no problems with any of them. All three are well made. For that matter, I made a quick adjust two point from the shoulder carrying strap of an ALICE pack and a standard AR sling.

Magpul MS2. The MS3 is picky about mounts. You have to use the Magpul mounts.

Gear Sector has a nice sling as well.

3 points are extinct. Have you ever fallen overboard a fishing vessel and found your self tangled underwater in the net? Yeah, it's like that. It's even more fun when you're being shot at.

For 'tactical' 2 point slings, that is, slings for carrying the rifle in a ready position, transition to sidearm, etc, the most popular seem to be:

VCAS (vickers combat application sling, look for at blue force gear)
VTAC (viking tactics)
Magpul MS3 (and other MSx)

I have a couple of padded VCAS and am happy with them

2point work best for me. I tried military style slings that have metal clips but found they are too noisy for hunting unless you tape them up.

I used a Blackhawk SWIFT sling (3pt) on my service weapon overseas and loved it. I kick myself everyday because I forgot to put the stock sling (a 1PT) back on when I turned it in. 1Pt slings are good if you are going to be doing lots of tight moving with a LIGHT rifle. Having a bunch of junk on an AR hanging with a 1pt will get sore after awhile. You can decrease a lot of the pain with 3pt slings by taping some or all of the third strap down so it is less likely to get caught.

it's a compromise depending on how you think you will use it.

if you want a sling that's good as a carry strap and a shooting sling that you can 'sling in' with, then look at armageddon gear's sling. nice design.

if you want a carry sling that is fairly quick to bring the gun into action, then the VTAC or BFG slings mentioned above are good.

'fun and hunting' covers a lot of ground. still hard to figure out what you're doing with it.

A Blue Force Gear VCAS 2-point sling is the best AR sling money can buy, bar none. The Viking Tactics VTAC sling is pretty dang good too. The Gear Sector slings get good reviews, though I've never personally used one.

The Magpul slings are a distant fourth.

However I don't know the quality or even if a 1 point sling is a good idea.
IMHO, they aren't.

A 1-point sling is good for only basic retention, and even then, you have to worry about a barrel slinging around into your knees. A 2-point not only provides retention, but serves as a shooting aid, and is much better suited for securely carrying the rifle. Some say that 1-point slings are better for transitioning to firing to your weak hand, but with a little practice, you can easily do the same with a 2-point sling, and you have all the added benefits.
